Rear end

Local rescue squad called me looking for a rear end for there 86 f350 drw crash truck. All they could tell me is it was a sterling rear with a 3.73 gear.

Can some tell me what would be a good compatible rear end for this truck, make, model, year, ext. The one that's in it they ran it low on oil and it post to trashed I haven't had time to look at it. Thanks for the help

The Sterling 10 1/4 came in the 85 and up F250s and F350s...85-97 should def be a direct bolt-in deal. F350s were the only ones that could have DRW. I think the newer trucks still use the Sterling, but the bolt pattern is different.

Being DRW limits what will fit as far as an entire axle. First thing you need to find out is if it was a cab and chassis (likely) or a pickup frame. Cab and chassis have a narrower frame, narrower spring perches, and if that's what it is, you will need to find another cab and chassis axle.

The bolt pattern should be 8/6.5mm and 98 to 05 should 8/170. Right?

Can't recall the numbers for the lugnut pattern, but that sounds about right.

My 93 F350 is a cab & chassis, and has a 10.25.
If you were closer, and I had the right gears, I'd make you a deal. (I'm parting it out...)

they told you an incorrect gear ratio.the sterlings didn't get a 3.73 gear set option until the super duty era.major bummer i know lol.ford sure wised up about a bunch of options when building the 99+ super dutys.despite the dodge copy cat styling. oh i was so mad when they did that! (still not over it lol),they're alright.
she'll sport 3.55 or 4.10's.

It will be 8/6.5 Inches, not mm. The later is the mm spec. The later models are the 10.5 with the metric pattern as well. if you get in a bind finding parts, the internals are the same as the straight wheel, the difference is in the axle tubes. You can swap later parts in, not so much older into later. You will just have the speed sensor which you do not need for the 86.

I'd go with a late 92 - 97 ford rear, or find a dana 70 or 80 (preferably). The early ford 10.25 axle had a common problem for the yoke to wobble. The splines on the pinion were revised in 92 and made about a 1/4" longer. The bad thing is when you tighten the pinion nut down and start pulling the pinion away from the ring gear because of the crush sleeve. It's better to run it loose until you can find a replacement. If it is a chassis cab, the frame width is 34". If it is a chassis cab, you can use an axle from a chassis cab or a pickup (move spring mounting pads in), but not the other way around. The ford 10.25 axles were offered with a 3.08, 3.55, and a 4.11 ratio. If you find a dana rear under a ford, the u-joint should be the same size.
