its me again. anyone have ideas on waking my I6 with a 1 barrel up a little without sacrificing gas mileage? custom exhaust after cat puts the thrush turbo II muffler before the right rear tire with a down turn on it sounds pretty good
Getting rid of that 1bbl will wake her up significantly. Swap to a Clifford or Offenhauser 4bbl intake manifold with 87-91 EFI exhaust manifolds and you'll notice quite a bit of difference. After that though, you're gonna have to tear into the motor to get more power from it.
I am not sure I agree with the mileage not suffering by putting a larger carb on it. It's hard to have your cake and eat it too. If it were that easy, surely the factory would have done so when they sold the truck, or had it as a option.
Your six is a long stroke lugging engine, made for power down low. Live it with it and enjoy it, or put a small v8 like the 302 in it that likes to rev. You can get fuel mileage out of this engine, if you check/change your rearend ratio or go with a overdrive transmission.
actually i get about 22mpg with my one barrel. and i was thinking of putting a 2bbl on it but i heard going to a 4bbl kills the I6 because it sucks too much in at once
If you are getting about 22 mpg and are interested in maintaining gas mileage, don't change a thing. You are currently getting the best gas mileage your truck can get. As Dave F. points out, getting better performance without sacrificing mpg is something Ford engineers probably had some small interest in.
well i want to get a little bit more performance but i dont want to drastically alter the gas milage say like down to 10 mpg. would putting a mild cam in hurt?
A popular swap is a small holley 390 cfm 4bbl and a 4bbl aftermarket intake, and installing later efi dual exhaust manifolds or a header. Doing this though will change the characteristics of the engine, and you will have to wind it up to get more out of it. If you are getting 22 mpg now, I suspect you have something lower than a 3.00 rear gear. You would have to change that out to something around a 3.50 if you are going to modify the engine for more airflow with the carb, intake and exhaust. If you don't, it will be pretty much undriveable, since the "new" updated engine will be out of it's powerband.
And since you are dealing with a six, all these hop-up parts are 3 times the cost of the more common 302 hop-up parts. That 390cfm carb is very expensive.

Howdy,
I am putting that 390 CFM carb on the 292 Y-block going in my 55 F-600.
I got it for about $330 new from an auto parts place in LA about a couple of years ago. It's around $370 now. It might be less after xmas...
If I was getting 22mpg with a different carb, I'd be hard pressed to change anything!! Although putting that Holley on a 300 might give you a little better performance the mileage will be dependent on how you position your right foot!
I just put 2 and 2 together, the original poster in this thread is the same one wanting to change his truck to 4wd with a lift in a another thread. I am certain his fuel mileage is going to suffer from that, though he probably doesn't know that yet. And usually with a lift comes oversize tires. A gear change is going to be mandatory with all that, and he may get that all worked out automatically with a donor 4x4 truck.
