Hey guys i have a 92 f150 5.0 auto with some millage on it. I bought it and found out that the oil pan had a hole in it with a cheap patch work. Any way I have the truck sitting while i do some work to it and havent really driven it except around the driveway. Well im thinking its an oil issue but figured i would ask anyway. I hear a ticking noise coming from the motor when i start it up. I know its been sitting a while but im not sure if there is no oil getting to the valves or what. I know this is hard to dignose without seeing it but any ideas would be great.
possibly an exhaust leak? I know that almost all our 92-96 manifolds crack easy. I get a ticking noise as well from it. not too shure if its related to your oil issue tho.
Yea i wasnt sure if it was related to the oil issue but know that i know to look for exhaust leak I will look into that. If I find a crack what is it that needs to be replaced the headers? If so I have a set from a mustang that i had for a streetrod i was going to use, will those work if i need to replace them?

Well that depends on where you find the crack. I vote exhaust manifold leak, very common on these. And you said that it happens when you start it up leading me to believe that it gets quieter/goes away when the truck warms up due to the manifold expanding and temporarily fixing the leak.
not really sure i dont really keep it on to long i was afraid it was low on oil and i would hurt it worse then it was. Im going to have to look at the manifolds. If its cracked and i want to fix them whats the best route to go?

Well pull the dipstick and check the oil man
My 1990 5.0L had both manifolds cracked all the way around. I took the opportunity to put shorty headers on it.
I have a friend with the same truck and years ago he had over 400,000 miles on it, he should be over 500,000 by now. He still drives it every day. He said he went through 3-4 sets of expensive FoMoCo replacements that all cracked on him. He finally found a set of $40 el-cheapo's from china that have held up for years now.
its there during idle and under a load. If it gets louder im not 100 perccent sure but it seems consitinet. its the same tone all the time if not a slight louder when its under a load

According to what you just said, its definitely not an exhaust leak. Ticking is prob a collapsed lifter or less likely, low oil pressure.
