Camshaft eccentric on a 360...

There is no way the canshaft eccentric on an FE should be free to turn is there? I rebuilt many Windsors over the years, but i have very little experience on the FEs.

i was replacing a leaking fuel pump today and was having issues getting it realigned and sitting in the hole properly. I reached into the timing chain cover to feel where the eccentric is.I

1) the chain feels awful loose.
2) the eccentric can easily be turned with my finger tips.

On the upside, i was going to partially teardown the engine to fix a rear main leak. Now it looks like the front end has to come off too. I am seriously considering a cam swap at present as well while i am in there.

I dont want to waste anymore cash on the motor if i dont have to tho. Was loking at replacing it with a 302 or 351W later.
Opinions? Comments on eccentric being loose?

If it's the 2 piece eccentric, which i assume it is, the outer ring should turn freely.

^^Yep.

If you don't plan on swapping in a 390 rotating assembly somewhere down the line, then I wouldn't bother with a cam swap. You won't see the gains you expect out of the 360. CR is just too low with the piston so far down the hole. The 390 rotating assembly can be found pretty cheap though, as little as $200 for crank/rods/pistons ready to run.

The eccentric is two piece? The diagrams i have found so far only show a one piece. If that is correct, then i can go ahead hen huh?

That's the earlier style, Ford went to a 2pc. eccentric in 72/73?, i know my '69 FE had a 1pc. eccentric when i tore it down.

Yup, The eccentric is two piece. The outer ring is free to rotate on the inner eccentric. This was to reduce wear on the pump arm and eccentric itself. This allowed the outer ring to do more "pushing" on the pump arm rather than rotating and rubbing wear on the arm.

C3AZ-6287-A (replaced B8A-6287-A) .. FE Eccentric ~ 1958/73.

D5TZ-6287-A .. FE Inner Eccentric ~ 1974/76.

D5AZ-6287-C .. FE Outer Eccentric ~ 1974

D0AZ-6287-B .. FE Outer Eccentric ~ 1975/76

But...who knows what year the engine in the truck is...now? Is it the original, or is it from...lawd only knows...some other year?

Peeps tend to swap parts around, so the only way to know...for sure...is to take a look-see.

The OP's sig states the truck is a 76, so the 2 piece style should be in place.

This is the kit I got. Any of these pin will go in there ?

And this is how I have it without pin.

I have a mustang 69 And I have the same eccentric Did you not put the pin? Is it supposed to be without the pin?

The camshaft dowel pin is shorter on the 2 piece eccentric engines. to allow the little tab on the center eccentric to set in the holes. Older single piece ones need the long dowel pin to protrude out past timing gear to locate eccentric.

Correct. the washer on the cam bolt partially covers the pin to make sure it stays in place.
