I just got my engine back together and i turned it over for a while and a flame came out of the header i turned it over again and it backfired out of the carb pretty bad and it started smoking and the i truned it over agai and smoke comes out of everywhere so i pulled the distributor and it was smoking in the block somewhere i have no idea what it is or what happened can you guys please help me?
First thing: verify your distributor is back on the appropriate cam gear. In other words, make sure you are not way out on your timing. Put the number one cylinder at TDC and verify that your dizzy is pointing to the number one spark plug wire.
Do you feel good about your cam to crank timing/position? Did you install the cam and timing chain or did somebody else?
It sounds like its just not in the ballpark for proper ignition.
I am under a different name now .
Yes i put the chain in i am almost positive that it is right and that it as pointing to the #1 cylinder but i could be mistaken, is there anything else that it could possibly be? Or are you sure thats what it is?
TDC must be on the compression stroke for number one cylinder, then the rotor should be pointing to number one terminal on the dist cap. You can find compression stroke on number one cylinder by putting your finger in the plug hole and bumping the engine until you feel compression, then use a socket and braker bar to turn the engine to TDC. Line the timing pointer up on TDC at the balancer. Or with the valve cover off turn the engine over until the valves on number one cylinder are closed. You should be able to turn the push rod with your fingers when the timing pointer is at TDC on the balancer. If you pumped a lot of fuel in the engine trying to start it change the oil before you go any farther. You will damage a new motor by starting it with diluted oil in the crankcase.
I had the same problem in my rebuilt 351M engine. I went into the heart of the engine and found out that it was sucking air from a valve it shouldn't have been sucking. Try doing that. Thats my 2 cents.
