I had a 2002 X with a V10. Sold it because it couldn't pull my fifth wheel trailer. Now the 5th wheel is gone, and I have 9000 pound travel trailer. I like many others are trying to find whats left of the available Excursions. Most have too many miles, too bad of condition, or stupidly priced. Like many others I am leary of the 6.0. I found an X at a dealership that had had the head milled, new valvetrain, egr delete, oil cooler, and head studs.
Would anyone consider buying an 6.0 that has had the famous 6.0 problems and then been fixed? Would you have confidence in a truck like this?
When I entertained the thought of getting another X and possibly selling my 7.3 (I know, what was I thinking ), I was specifically looking for a 6.0 with studs and an EGR delete. I came accross a few, but they either wanted an insane amount of money or the undercarriage had some serious rust.
If it were I southern truck and they had receipts, I wouldn't hesitate to buy one with studs and an EGR delete. The only thing I would add is a coolant filter to keep both the Oil and EGR cooler clean and happy.
If you have the bread, drive it, see how it feels, see if they'll offer a warranty, and jump on it.
I bought my 6.0 with 89K and currently have 150K. I love it.
I think based on my experience and what I've read from others on this forum it's true that there are some points of failure with the 6.0. The good thing is that they're well documented and there are good repair procedures and aftermarket parts available.
I'm not a mechanic but I have been able to repair the issues with my 6.0 based on docuementation and assistance from this site.

yes, yes, and yes
head studs and EGR delete = one reliable monster
spend $150 on a Scangauge II. Drive the X at highway speeds for 10-20 minutes after the motor is 100% warmed up. Watch the Tfw (Coolant Temp) PID and input the EOT (Engine Oil Temp) PID. Ford spec is a 15f difference. A healthy oil cooler will see 1-9F delta.
Even if you cannot find a studded 6.0, the Scangauge will help you find a healthy motor. The root cause of all the issues the 6.0 has is the oil cooler. So verify the temp difference is good and drive away happy IMO
