Mine is straight piped; (we don't have inspections in MD on diesels........yet!), and I don't really notice that much noise in the truck unless I am really pushing it mostly pulling my 20' enclosed trailer or pulling my Jeep.
I just got done installing an MBRP 4" on my Ex. What a PITA!
Worst part is the pipes are heavy, and lining up everything (don't even try to install the down pipe without help). Getting the down pipe in was a puzzle in itself, trying not to tweak the flange.
I used band clamps from NAPA so as not to crimp the pipes. Removing the passenger rear shock was also a big help.
The truck now is quiet inside compared to the stock system. I would have thought otherwise.
Oh well, time to cleanup and tend to my wounds after this 2 day battle.

Wow, mine wasn't bad at all. I loosened the down pipe clamp at the turbo, cut the stock DP before the crossmember then wiggled the bottom of the DP and it popped right off the system. Wife helped hold the bottom of the DP as I aligned the clamp then she went inside and I lined everything else up. My dad had to remove the rear shock on his install too. I didn't have to. I thought it would be harder with airbags but it wasn't. It's weird how different similar installs can be.
Anyway, good job. Put your feet up tonight and enjoy your new exhaust.
I struggled for at least an hour trying to figure out how to get the down pipe into position, and another 1.5 hrs trying to get it to line up with the turbo. I packed it in at midnight. This morning my wifes foster daughter helped hold up the DP and it was lined up in less than a minute. Yay! (I hope the V-Band clamp is on correctly).
I was trying to make sure that no parts were hitting the body, also. So I took my time aligning the system which took a while. Looks like I had about 1/4" - 1/16" clearance on the DP to this plastic heat shield near the trans pan. At least if the DP hits anything there isn't a knock sensor to go off! (Been there, done that).
I'll give it a few more heat cycles before checking and re-tightening bolts again.
Good read......I haven't done exhaust because I am afraid of the dreaded "drone" at a highway speed......I guess " not too bad" is relative to the owner.....anyone do a Magnaflow ? .....claims are that they are quieter.
Since we're posting some vids anybody want to guess which system I used. Some of you already know so shhhh... It's a quick phone vid so it's just sitting on the ground...
I am happy with my stock exhaust but it is getting some pretty serious surface rust... I will probably change it out to whatever the quietiest stainless aftermarket system is. Kinda disappointed that the stock one is rusting so bad. Nothing else under my truck has a spot of rust on it.

Not even the driveshaft? I figured Ford sprayed those with sea water at the factory.
