Truck died, changed CPS, checked codes???

Hi all, pretty much as title states, truck suddenly died driving down the highway, my wife came with the mini van and pulled me to the next exit (that must have been a picture ). Anyway I left it at a bowling alley, went back this morning, still wouldn't start, changed out the old gray CPS w/ a new black one, added a little oil (it was still in the checkered area but just in case) and it still wouldn't start. So I hooked up the A&E, got the usual P0470, P0475, P0541, but also got P0340 (Camshaft Position Sensor A circuit (bank 1 or single sensor)) and I also got a P1139 (water in fuel indicator circuit).

I double checked the CPS connector, still no start.

Any ideas? I'm really confused, but that doesn't take much.

As always, like Bartles and James used to say "Thank you for your support".

Oh Yeah!!! I forgot about that.

But that wouldn't throw the P0340 CPS code would it?

Thanks...

Hey Howard.

I agree with the fuel bowl heater going bad. If the fuse is blown, unplug the connection on the fuel bowl and change the fuse and be own your way.

I'm going to drag it home now, but will check the fuse first.

I just still don't understand how that could give me the CPS code???

Try a different cps after you check the fuse. I have bought bad ones from the store. Never know.

Might of been just from dying. Clear the codes and see if it comes back. I would also check the rpm's while cranking with AE.

The cps code could be an old code just stored. Do you get the check engine and wait to start light when you turn the key on.

I guess I will, just seems unlikely...

I got it towed home, checked the fuses and all good. But I remembered that I had disconnected the fuel bowl heater before, so that shouldn't be it anyway.

The tach moves a little while cranking, I'll have to figure out how to check with the A&E. What do the rpms while cranking tell you?

I do get the wait to start and check engine lights when I turn the key on. What does it indicate if they don't?

Thanks guys for the tips, I appreciate the help.

The connector on the back of the fuel bowl is also for water in fuel so if that's disconnected that might be the reason for the code. RPM"S should be above 100 while cranking. That indicates a good tach signal to the pcm and the cps is good.

So if the tach needle moves the CPS is good?

Yes. Unless its an '02 or newer. I think the '02 and newer doesn't rise till it cranks. Don't hold me to it though.

Better to verify with AE but on most trucks yes. Unless you get a code that comes back I wouldn't think the cps.

I have not had time or weather cooperation to work on it for a few weeks, but I'm back at it today. I cleared the codes, CPS did not come back, just two exhaust pressure codes (P0475, P0470). RPMs while cranking are @145, so I'm assuming it is not the CPS.

I don't know where to go from here. Any ideas?

Make sure the IPR nut didn't fall off. Also search for a thread I started called "I dont know where to start", or something like that. Sorry, don't know how to post a link. There are instruction in there for testing the IPR solenoid. I'd also do the EBP sensor check with AE that is also in that thread. I don't think the EBP will kill the truck, but I would suspect a bad sensor or clogged tube with the codes you mentioned.

EDIT: Have to get the truck running before you can check out your EBP sensor. I remember seeing a list of conditions that had to be met for these motors to start. RPMs, IPR duty cycle, etc. Try to find that and verify those with AE.
