Ive got a 2000 f250 4x4 v10 with 136000 miles I have smelled coolant occasionally for a while when I'm running it hard. I have to drive on a beach through the sand to get home and at high tide it can be a hard pull for the truck. A few weeks ago I was unlocking the hubs and it had some coolant leaking on the pass. Side frame rail. The gauge was normal and it wasnt boiling over- it just looked like it had leaked at the cap. I put a new cap on the degas bottle and I have since had the thermostat fail and I replaced that but its still leaking out occasionally. The coolant level always seems normal and has never been way up at the top like it would be if it's running out. There seems to be pressure on the degas bottle. So im really stumped. Any ideas? Could it be related to the fan clutch? Sometimes when it does it I'm not even running it that hard. I have 3 gas super duties and this is a new prob for me. Thanks in advance!
Could it be a blown head gasket? Doing a leak down test might be in order if only for peace of mind. I hope its not that serious but does have those symtoms.
Hose, hose clamp, fitting, or water pump. May only leak at high running temps. May be pinhole in radiator. And if you smell it in the truck it could be a heater core. Keep looking, it may be right under your nose.
