I bought new lock washers for the two nuts on my 74 F250 rear axle. My question is, is the outer nut the only one that gets the tabs bent over it or do you bend a tabs over on the inner nut also. I can't see where it says to do both nuts but from the looks of my old ones they had bent tabs in both directions. Thanks for your help
You don't have to bend the tabs over the inner nut, but some people prefer to do so.
In theory, the inner nut is held in place by the outer nut having been tightened down against it and locked into place. Therefore, it cannot back off. It shouldn't tighten itself up either, since it has the tension of the bearings against it, plus the tension from the lock nut.
The outer nut, properly tightened, shouldn't back off either, but the tabs are just an extra measure of safety.
Yes they have to be bent both ways. The rear Dana 60 lock washer has no locating tab and the spindle has no keyway for one so in theory it could be free to spin off if they are not locked together. Not saying it will spin off, just thats the way the factory did it for safety.
