I just replaced my front automatic hubs with warn manual hubs. My truck is a 1997 F350 so I used the relacement nut kit instead of the original nut and locking system.I put on the nut against the bearing and then the locking washer. Then I put on the lock nut. How tight does this lock nut need to be? I turned it as tight as I could and then snugged it up by hammering it around with a screwdiver and a mallet. Short term I know this will hold, but long term I worry about everything getting loose and coming apart. Is their a special tool to tighten this nut? Where do I get it and how much torque does it need? Thanks
Install the inner lock nut with the pin on the outside. Seat the inner lock nut to 50 ft-lbs while spinning the wheel, then back the inner nut off by 90 degrees. This seats the bearing.
Install the lock plate so that the the key is positioned in the groove of the front wheel spindle. Make sure that the pin in the inner lock nut fits into a corresponding hole of the lock plate. You can turn the lock plate over if necessary to align the pin to a lock plate hole. If the pin still does not align, slightly tighten the inner lock nut to match the closest hole in the lock plate.
Torque the outer lock nut to 160 to 205 ft-lbs torque. End play of the front wheel spindle should be 0.000 to 0.004 inches and the front wheel should spin easily.
It is worth using the special tool to make sure that you torque that lock nut properly.
Wow, That is exactly the information I was looking for. I'll get that tool and put my hubs on right. Thank you so much for taking the time to help me out. Not knowing if I had made a mistake or not would have always bothered me. Thanks again ,Clint
