V8 O2 sensor harness connectors!

How in the blue blazes are you supposed to disconnect any of them other than the Bank 2 sensor 1 O2?! They are all on top of the transmission and you can't get your arm up there because it's way too tight to get half a hand in there, much less the arm length needed to get at it!

Any trick other than to pull a seat ,carpetting and the access panel? Seems like a helluva lot of work for a darn sensor!

What year V8 are you referring to? I changed all the O2 sensors on my 2000 V8, but haven't tried on the 2004 yet. I don't remember having a whole lot of trouble unplugging the sensors, it was getting the rear sensor plugged back in that was difficult. I ended up bear hugging the transmission from a creeper, reaching around it from both directions and going by feel to plug the new sensor in.

Ha, duh..sorry It's a 1996 Explorer. Both exhaust pipes are in the way to get up to the sensor plug, which is fastened to the top of the transmission. Matter of fact, both downstream sensors are mounted up there as well, with only the Drivers side sensor being the easy one to replace ( that one being the one directly under the bellhousing ).

There must be some differences between where the sensors are located in the 1996 versus the 2000. I pulled up the steps in the factory service manual for both model years and for 2000 the instructions mention removing the skid plate. No such mention of this in the steps for the 1996. Of course there's no detail on how to position your arms and such, just unplug, use shallow socket T94P-9472-A (same for both years), and unscrew. Use a light coating of anti-seize ESE-M12A4-A on the threads of the new sensors.

Well, I'd take a picture of where they are, but I don't know if I could actually get the camera lense to focus on where they actually are through the jungle of exhaust pipes, tranny cooler lines and sheet metal. Fortunately, I believe I was focusing on the wrong sensor, so I may have to only repair the truck by replacing the easier sensor ( need to verify first though ). However, I prefer to replace 02's in pairs so I'm still stuck with the task of getting that harness disconnected and reconnected. Seems to me that someone has to have come up with a process that gets it done easier than pulling the center console and floor carpet.

Even if you pulled the console and carpet I don't think you'd find any access panel to allow you easier access to the connectors, unless you decided to cut your own access panel.
