Carrier Bearing Replacement

So some questions.

I just replaced my carrier bearing today on my 2002 F350(OEM Part). First of all I read EVERYWHERE that it is a press off press on bearing but mine(and the local ford shop) said they are slip on and off not press...And it was.

So, I installed it EXACTLY how it was taken off. I also greased the yoke while I was at it. I marked all drive train components to ensure I installed them correctly.

When I went on my test run my loud banging vibration was gone(my carrier bearing had about 1/4 inch play and the bearings were falling out). But now I get this slight hum/vibration in my seat, nothing like before still a vibration...

What the hell?

And I just was wondering, what would happen if you dud put that carrier bearing in backwards? I'm doubting myself now. 9

Backwards shouldn't matter much. As long as the bearing moves freely and the angle isn't changed, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

How easy did the new one slip on and how easy did the old one slide off? We had to cut my old one off and drive the new one on. Is there any play between the shaft and bearing? The vibration you're talking about sounds like maybe something's a little loose.

Semper Fi.

It didn't slide on and off freely. I had to hammer it off and I used the old one ontop of the new one to bang it on. But it still went on easy enough. There is no play in the shaft, I tried to move it and there is zero play.

The vibration starts at 30mph and never goes away. It's not a violent shaking but a very noticeable vibration.

Every nut and bolt I touched is tight... I'm really at a loss

Just a thought. Did you buy the truck new. If you bought it used, maybe the person who had it before you replaced the bearing and did not put the right size in. If you had a vibration before and now you still have one but it is a slight vibration. Maybe the new one you put in is just shy of the right size. I know that you said everthing is stock size.

I was just thinking out loud maybe just a tad bit bigger just might make the vibr go away.

The other thing that come to mind is the drive shaft or the angle of the drive shaft going into the rear axle.

Was there play side to side in the bracket when the bolts were loose? I have that same humm at 45 to 50 and i think that when I bolted that bracket back up I might have got it off to one side or the other.

I did buy it used but the one I took off was the original. I got a new one from the ford dealer and they used my vin to order it.

You think booting the bracket for the carrier bearing alittle to the left or right would make that much of a vibration? It couldn't be off more than a fraction since the boot holes are pretty much straight forward?

I'm tempted to take it out and spin it around.

Does or can anyone take a close up picture of there bearing? Preferably from a 2002 or close too....

I've seen the picture in the write up done by a member on here but his looks different like it may be from a different year and is a different style.

Mine is an 07 and I know mooving it up and down a quarter inch changes the vibration, it looked to me like there was that much play in my mount bracket holes. It's to cold to crawl under there now to check the allignment of the rear and intermediat shaft but that's the next thing I'll try.

So I loosened the carrier bearing bracket bolts and tapped it over a bit and that did nothing. What a pain in the ***.

When changing dad's i had to take the spacer off the original to make the new one sit at the same height.

How are the other u-joints in the drive line?

All the u joints are new. I replaced every single one.

What spacer are you referring to? My new one came with a metal spacer type thing but didn't use it because there was nothing like it on the one I removed...

Dad's had a spacer spot welded on it.
Noticed it when putting side by side.

There was an obvious difference in height also when held in position.

Sorry i did not take any pic's.
Dad's is an 06 so it could be a little different..
