Vibration!!!!

Hey all,

I have a '79 F250 camper special 2wd. Everything on the truck is brand new. Just finished a restoration. But I have a vibration, which started as a out of round tire, so I got that fixed and the vibration decreased a lot. But there's still a vibration at highway speed, enough to shake the seat back and I can see the hood move but it feels like it's from the rear end. It has new bearings and seals, new tires, new steady bearing. The driveshaft is Aliigned properly. What do you think it could be? A couple people have said it could be the steady bearing, but I just replaced it? Any other ideas?

By "steady bearing" do you mean the carrier bearing?
If the drive shaft is alined properly, you might have to shim the carrier/center bearing support.

The bearing at the end of the first driveshaft. Can you elaborate the shimming?

I used washers on my 86.

A balance job at a good tire shop will include check of any wheel or tire issues including wheel wobble or out of round. Inspection is often visual by an experienced tech but it makes a difference. My '79 runs smooth after 2'nd balance at a 2'nd shop. My It may be worth a second round of balance.

On way to diagnose is to swap wheels/tires front and rear. If the vibration follows the wheel/tire, good chance that is the problem.

Also would not hurt to jack it up and check for any slop in rear wheel bearings or excess axle end play. Front also.

I have exhausted the wheel/rim balancing issue. I have got 3 new tires (one was out of round) I bought a new rim, and have got them all balanced 4 times now, including a rode force balance. I'm certain it's not in the wheels. The steady bearing has got me curious.

I wonder if the 1/32 (or whatever the clip thickness is) on one side but not the other could be my issue...?

Are the driveshaft and coupling shaft properly phased to each other? It's gotta be dead-nuts aligned.

Verify the following:

^^^ YES ... the shafts need to be properly aligned , or vibration will result from improper alignment .
Also on the tire balance thought ... I see " modern " tire balance equipment fail often on this type of issue . I did tire work 20 years ago . A trained eye catches issues that the newer " high Tech " machines fail to find .
I have seen cars with your complaint with 5 oz of weights on a front rim ! Something is wrong with that much weight in one spot .

If vibration is at speed only check King Pins.

So what about you rear axle (pinion) bearing did you replace it to?

Yes x2 on the d/s "phasing" or alignment being very important, especially on a SC.

"Shimming" means when you use a piece of metal to drop or space the carrier bearing (steady bearing as you call it) down from the cross member a bit to make the d/s line straighter, mostly needed when you lift a 4x4 SC.

Have you inspected the complete d/s for a missing balance weight looks like a small rectangle riveted or tacked on. Look for a spot that looks different in color.

Motor mounts good, trans mounts good?

At what speed does the vibration start and does it stay the same amount with speed increase?

Could also be your drive line yokes or the spline shafts if they weren't replaced they can get some play in them. Will result in a phasing vibration (comes and goes at different speeds)

I'm going to crawl under there today and check my d/s for all these points. I did change the tire size by a couple inches. Enough to throw the speedo out. Maybe that change is enough to change that angle. I checked for missing weights, but didn't see any. Thanks for all the help guys!
