Hey all....been working on my project truck a 1956 f-100 with a 272. I am currently stuck on the 5th bearing. The journal appears to have two bolts going into the block but no way to get these bolts out. Does that sound familiar to anyone.
I know the journal will be in there pretty good and the seals ...sealed good but what are those two bolts or are they. They look like the ends (not heads) of bolts coming up from the block. They are not the small bolts that come out of the journal to the housing. ????? I'm stuck and can go no further....jim
I think you're talking about the rear seal retainer and the fact that you need a thin-walled deep socket to get those silly bolts out. I happen to have a socket that would bit, but it was a close fit. It was a Craftsman socket, 1/4" drive IIRC.
Are you gonna bore that baby out to a 292? What heads to you have, ECZ-A?
Thanks PC....I'll give that a try...sounds logical. Is there something for a socket to grasp though?
Don't know if I'll keep as a 272 or change to a 292.... This motor ran about 5 years ago and has been sitting. I am taking it apart now to just to see what I have and how bad it is...It is not cracked...so with that in mind I can go anywhere...never thought much of going up but now that you mentioned it....jim
I cleaned it up a bit...more then a bit, and you can see a finely 12 point hexed bolt. Never saw one of those before! It takes a 12 pt, 3/8 deep socket ...quarter drive worked great.
I took the engine down to the machine shop and we are going to turn it into a 292. It has been overhauled before to the max in someplaces. I can still use everything, just a bit more power. No-one will tell the difference....jim
