Hood spring hinge question

Truck is a 79 f150 ranger. The passenger side hood hinge is not closing the hood all the way when the hood is shut. The drivers side closes down all the way but you have to push the passenger side down. It goes down easily but will come up about 1/4- 1/2 an inch after driving. I greased the moving parts of the hinge up but still doing it. Could the spring need to be replaced? any ideas?

Dang Bill!!
Ford sure thinks an awful lot of those hinges. And just think, a couple of months ago I was ragging on NPD for wanting $400.00 and $615.00 for NOS hinges.....now, that sounds like a bargain.
Kinda wonder though, why the right side is 2 1/2 times as much as the left.

You never worked at a body shop, did you Mike? The right side of vehicles...historically, gets damaged far more often than the left side.

Right side 'crash' parts go out of stock quicker. If the demand is still there, more are made, so...the prices go up.

These hinges were, as I recall, about 40 bucks each when the trucks were new, the springs about 15 bucks each.

So, you can guess how many times they were remade. Most body repairs were paid by insurance companies, also consider that F500/750's also used them, and...

These hoods (and 1961/66 & 1967/72) have a tendency to fly up while motorin' on down the road. The hood might survive, maybe the springs, but usually not the hinges, as they stretch/contort.

btw: I got those prices off the propriety locator.

Numberdummy- sorry I mean its rising up at the back of the hood on the passenger side right above the hinge the hood is not flying up. The hinge and springs are on LMC.

Everyone is always learning. Don't be affraid to ask any questions you might have.
You'll see there are a lot of good, knowledgeable people here (and a few grouches) more than willing to help you learn about these old "tanks" that we love.

I know what you're talking about inre to the hood, but you prolly haven't owned the truck since it was new, so you don't know its history.

It doesn't take too much for these hoods to fly up, and when this occurres, unless both hinges are replaced, the hood no longer fits correctly where it meets the cowl.

Since only one side is the problemo, my guess is, one hinge was replaced, one wasn't. These hinges were not painted originally, were bare steel, as naked as a new born pup.

I had a similar problem as the original poster and while I can't guarantee that my hinges aren't a little worn out, I was able to get the hood to close and align properly by simply adjusting the position of the hinge. If you move the front of the hinge up, the rear of the hood goes down when closed. I know, I know, it sounds screwy but that is how it works. Give that a shot first.

I had the same issue on another vehicle (with the same style hinges), and the issue was that the hinge had been replaced, but was not bolted down at the proper angle. Adjusting it as described by Poison Oil Racing above solved the problem.

You've got adjustment at the hinge. Play with it a little and you may can get it right.
