I found a 1946 Heavy Duty Ford truck on a farm. It is in rough shape but I'm up for the challange. My problem is I bought the truck without a title and no one knows who owned the truck, now I can't get the State to issue a title even though I have a bill of sale and the serial number checks out as not stolen. There was a state inspection sticker on the windshield from 1955, but there are no State records going back that far. If the truck was owned by farmer in 1955, he passed away in the 1970's and the property was sold as part of the estate with all monies going to the State because there was no family. I don't want to restore the truck only to find out I can't get a title, and to get a reconstructed title it must be insured and inspected (roadworthy), etc., etc. Anyone have any ideas? It sure would look nice next to my tow truck (www.classicrwd.com)
Because there was no family the State had everything and they conducted the sale of the property. I have tried everything I can think of with the State but it is like talking to a brick wall. One person even said and I quote, "Who would want an old junker like that anyway?", they think I am out of my mind. The other big problem is that I am not sure who owned the truck, I am just guessing that it was that man who passed away because he had no family. Years ago I got a truck under similar conditions, I went to someone in another state and titled it there then transfered the title here. That option is no longer open as that State has changed their title laws. I understand that there is a place in Maine to get it titled, but they also require it to be inspected by an ASE mechanic and the vehincle must be insured and pictures supplied with the application.
There's also a link in that article to a sample form filed in one of the PA counties. You should check your counties "self-help" center for a similar form and go from there. It'll probably be cheaper to get than you think.
Thanks for the link, I think that is probably the way to go. As far as the county, they are very backward, we still have horses running around on all our roads Thanks again, I'll post an update as I progress through the State system.
A friend of mine was in the same boat you are in. He ended up going through a company that makes you a title but they charge $300 dollars to do it. I believe he found the ad in a Round Up car mag.
hi,
I can't speak for all states, but if you live in texas what you do is get a mechanic to
"perform service" on the truck, then the shop takes out a mechanics lien on it by filing with the state. if the debt is not paid, the shop now owns the title free and clear.
check with a few auto shops around your area, see if this will work for you,
Here in Florida, all I had to do was go to the DMV and explained to them that the truck had never been registered since it was a farm truck. They gave me a carbon paper form to take a stencil of the VIN # imprinted on the frame on this State form in front of an authorized official, which was either a police officer, notary or a licensed car dealer. I took the completed form in to the DMV, paid the taxes & title fees and 3 months later had my new title in hand.
I have the original title, but didn't want to give that up - its in awesome shape and the state would have just destroyed this piece of the trucks history.
