ok guys so im new to the 6.4....i had a 6.0 with a sct tuner before that deleted the egr and everything was good.... what im trying to find out is that if i get a tuner (thinking about getting the H&S XRT) and program the truck to delete the dpf is everything all good after that...will the dpf soot up over time?...will it need to be cleaned periodically?....or can i "set it and forget it?".... i cant get a dpf delete pipe due to the emissions laws in Massachusetts....but i would really like to get better fuel mileage.... so any input is much appreciated!!!...thanks guys!

Do NOT, I repeat, Do NOT use a tune that will disable your DPF without actually removing it. H&S does make DPF On tunes, but they seem to cause more frequent regens. I recommend the Banks Six Gun. It's More DPF friendly and should decrease the frequency of your regens.
What is it about emissions laws specific to Massachusetts? The Feds have laws restricting the alteration or tampering of emissions related components, but everyone seems to still do it.

If the DPF is installed, it must be cleaned regularly to keep from clogging (this is the regen). Ford set a failsafe in the computer of about every 600 miles max, in case the sensors failed. Much more than that and u start to impact performance and probably by 1000 miles you'll be dead on the side of the road. (we've had discussion on some of those exact failures here)
I did the delete & tune on my 08 DRW and saw a net gain towing of 1.5mpg.. 9->10.5. Once tuned the mpg reading on the dash will be incorrect, mine read 22-24 mpg, while I really only got 10. so you will have to hand calc..
I never got over 400 miles to a 38 gallon tankful.
ok....glad u guys filled me in.... so its not like just shutting off the egr on the 6.0.... i guess i have 2 choices either to tune and delete the dpf and put it on and off once every year for inspection or go with a more dpf friendly tuner and just leave the dpf on the truck permanently..... is the banks six gun a tranny-friendly tuner?? and worth the investment or am i better off just staying stock... i mean its nice to have the added power when u want it...i loved my SCT tuned 6.0...but this 10mpg **** really does suck and i would like to get better mpg's one way or another!!... thanks guys!!
Don't buy a tuner expecting big results...a mile or two at best is all you can expect. Drive cycle will be your best way to control fuel use.
Staying off the boost, rpms under 2K lite throttle coasting to stops.
If you can increase your regen interval that will save a few right there.
Banks is a dpf friendly tuner and works well with the tranny. I usually run mine just over stock (ford tune). I think that is the best one to add some power but also for best ecomony.

i deleted the dpf/doc with a 4" straight pipe and have a tuner hooked up. I did SOAP samples and was getting between 5-7% fuel dilution on a 5k mile oil change. I didn't like the regen kicking in while towing my 5th'er through the hills of CA

Never got over 400 miles to a 38 gallon tank? Damn. I was getting 14 mpg and almost always was touching 400 miles a tank. But then again mine is an 08 f250 swb. I didn't think 14 mpg was that good for this truck. Then I deleted my egr/dpf and straight piped it with s&b air intake about a week ago.
