No, my truck is not overheating, but the radiator I have now needs some repair and I would rather put in a new one. So before I purchase, I wanted know what optiions I might have. Currently have the 460 3-core 24"x26". Modine I think, offers this in a 4-core, (not a cross/flow). I thought I read a post some while ago about a cross flow radiator offered for these trucks at a cost of Approx. $529.00, but I can't find it.
I used the aluminum cross flow "custom fit" radiator from Be Cool. Also got the 15" electric fan. If I had to do it again I think I would just go with the "desert cooling" 4 row brass.
Benefits of the alum. unit.
Very high cooling capacity.
Pretty much a bolt in.
Lots of wow factor.
Draw backs.
High cost.
Adapt new hoses. (Pep Boy Universal)
Drill a few holes.
You have to create a shroud for either the electric or mechanical fan or it will not cool well under harsh conditions.
A smaller water pump pulley might be in order.
Also. I don't think the cross flow neccessarily cools a lot better. It was originally developed to fit under the low hoods of modern cars.
Why not use A newer ford? Its an easy conversion and a brand new one is about $160.00. They are plentyful all you need to do is Get the lower mounts with rubber and fan shruod off a 1980-1996 pick-up from a bone yard. Then you center the radiator on the fan and drill two holes in the radiator support for the top mounting and install the lower mounts and mark where they go on the radiator support and bolt or weld the metal bracket there. If you have a 460,351w,302, or 300 six your set for radiator hoses just get the ones for the year truck you got the parts from. If you have and 360-390 Im not sure if the stock hoses will fit.
I hope this helps Leadmic
Why not use the plastic tanked radiator? I work for a gas utility co. as a mech. and we have a ton of Fords with the plastic tanks and I dont think I can recall even one truck that dident go 100,000mi befor having to have somthing done to it. For 160.00 you just throw it away and get another one. Also the problems Ive had with the stock super cool radiator that came in my truck (tanks and header tubes in the radiator wareing out at about 85,000 mi) I would take a plastic tank any day.
Just my two cents Leadmic
