It's only a nightmare if ya don't know where anything comes from or there are zillions of wires with the same color(s).
When I was in the Navy, one of the techs traced the internal communication system problem on a P3 Orion to the co-pilot's station, namely the plug that connected to the comm box. A plug that has internal circuitry. He proceeded to snip off about a hundred wires and brought the plug into the shop to order a new one. I asked him, "That was fast, you did tag all the wires, right? ......{insert eery silence here}.
The next day I had him working in the squadron tech library.
But they're made in the USA, you get to support your fellow working Americans, and they're built well and work well.
Go look at their Web site; last I saw, they had videos showing the design & testing procedures they go through to produce their gauges.
I would rather pay more and get higher quality products in return than support offshore manufacturing of rip-off products.

Yes, buy American made, quality when you can, its getting harder to do. I went the cheap route, bought the Equs set from O'Reillys because its what they happened to stock when I decided to get gauges. 6 months later I've already had to replace the temp gauge because it quit working. Wonder if Stewart-Warner is still made in USA?
Is Autometer really USA made only? I cruised over to their site and a quick glance I'm not seeing any MADE IN USA pride anywhere. I know in the past Autogage was MIM, but I have a feeling not ALL of the Autometer brand is Made in USA.

I had autometer and Stewart warners in my '04 powerstroke. I liked em a lot. Not sure on the where they're made. I had SW performance series and AM phantoms. They look identical.

OK, I heard back from AutoMeter!
And, as Poison said above, they're made in Illinois:

Glad to hear they are still made here. I may just replace my crap Equs with theirs. Not to stray off the subject but there is something wrong going on in the USA when our manufacturers are all going overseas. Ross Perot warned that this would happen with the passage of NAFTA and damn if he wasnt right. Now we have China trying to poisen our pet's food, lead in our kids paint on the crap toys they make and poisen us with formaldehyde sheetrock, not to mention all the jobs lost so we can save a few bucks. Lord knows what else will turn up toxic. Our food supply is more and more coming from other countries.
Henry Ford came out with the $5.00 a day workday wa yback when and reasoned that if he paid his employees enough, they would buy his cars; they did and he got rich doing it. We need more of that long term thinking in corporate America today instead of the short term-profit beancounters who are running things now. Sorry for the tangent but its a pet peeve of mine.
