or do chevy's have a different exhaust sound than fords? Every chevy truck that I've heard with any sort of aftermarket exhaust (and some without) have made sort of a pulsing sound, particularly when they accelerate. The fords, on the other hand, seem to be more smooth, like a BZZZZZZ. Sure, mine is kind of poppy, but even, what with the headers, turbo mufflers, and dual exhaust, but it has a distinctly different sound than chevies. Is this just a difference in the firing order, or what? Just an observation.
As far as I can tell here is the reason for this phenomenon. With the Ch*bby distributor being at the back of the engine and the timing chain being at the front, there is irregular torsional twist in the camshaft that drives the distributor, leading to uncontrolled timing events. This combined with the fact that the distributor is rotating the oposite direction that a Ford distributor does causes the air inside the cap to rotate in the unconventional direction for the northern hemisphere, thus also going against laws of nature. Combine all these problems and you have the unnecessary noise coming from their exhaust.
Don't mean to be a poop here, but I always thought the dodge's and chevies sounded meaner, at least stock. On the new ford's I'd imagine it's because they have overhead cams and the rest use pushrods.
Ken's got it right. In both hemispheres also. I love the ford sound. When my exhaust pipe broke on the 4.6L crown vic it sounded just like the 332 in the old grain truck. Wife made me fix it. I thought the 426 HEMIs sounded weak. They made up for it on the dragstrip though.
Huh. Very interesting. If it's the firing order, is it because they have two adjacent cylinders firing close to the same time, and would this make them less efficient?
The Ch's and Dog's I hear, you always hear the valvetrain working like it's struggling to get the exhaust out, the Fords seem to run smoother, therefore eliminating the valve/timing noise. Now I have heard Fords that sound like the Ch's and Dog's, but again the valve/timing noise is not present, that's why Fords seem quieter.
