I need help! Here's my problem: I have a '92 F-150 pictured in my gallery that I totalled this weekend. I slid off a dirt road into an oak tree and rolled on its side. Now, maybe it's just because I babied this truck or not, but I hate to see it go to a salvage yard. My question is, should I buy it back from the Insurance Co.? Parts that are good are as follows: complete engine (radiator is perfect, too), transmission, transfer case, rear end, suspension lift, tires & rims, the bed is scratched but can be saved, and the front end can probably be repaired. However, parts that are destroyed are as follows: frame damaged badly, cab, hood, fenders, front clip, front bumper, front driveshaft, driver & passenger doors. But mechanically it is sound. After it was flipped back over and towed to the body shop and I was getting belongings out of it, I turned it over and it fired right up, I put it into gear and clutch feels normal, not leaking any fluids, goes into all gears smoothly.
My ultimate question, is there enough good parts that would justify buying it back? It's got a salvage title without a doubt, but is the main components valuable enough to buy it back for? I hate to see a low mileage motor go to the scrapyard, simply because they will pay too little for it! Thanks for any help!!
I would do it if the price is right, Don't buy it for any more than what the insurance people gave you for it.
You can get pretty good amount of money for the parts you pull youself. I had a friend who totaled his 93 F-150. The insurance people gave him 5000 for it when it had 130k and was 6 years old. He bought it back for 2500 bucks and completely tore it apart and built another truck with the parts.
def buy it back from the insurance. you can get alot of money selling it piece by piece, the good body panels you can sell for good money to body shops, the can sell the engine piece by piece for lots of money, the whole interior you can take apart, sell the seats steering wheel, instrument cluster, if the front ttb is still in ok shape you can sell parts off that.
Sorry about your accident, that was a nice truck. But glad you're okay. I too would rebuild it I were you and planned to keep it. The only thing is the frame, you said it was pretty bad. If it can't be straightened, a new frame isn't cheap.
Don't let a good Ford go down. I would buy it back (for the right price.)
You can always use an older frame and even the front clip from any 80 up. If you use 92 or newer front clip just need to weld up a bumper bracket.

What's the problem here? This is a no-brainer. Buy it back and make it a trail rig. Remove the bed. Make it mechanically sound, and no water leaks into the cab (if you care). Then take it out on the trails and never worry about body damage again.
Thanks for the sympathy, guys! I had another, more detailed look at the truck and it seems that the TTB Dana 44 is damaged beyond repair, as well as the frame. The frame is bent so bad on the driver side front that the front left radius arm came in contact with the front driveshaft, and tweaked the driveshaft. However, the motor, transmission, transfer case, rear driveshaft, and rear end are all untouched! Like I say, I hate to see a truck that is mechanically sound go to a junk yard... I will keep you all posted what happens to it!
sorry to hear about the accident, butmaybe we could make some deals on the parts you don't use if you decide to buy it back from the insurance company. I just bought a 92 f-150 and am hoping to class it up a little, and again i am sorry about your truck.
I know EXACTLY how you feel. I was in the same spot may 10th when my truck was slammed into by a kid at 50 mph. Bend the frame. My only suggestion is to never by it back with the intention of trying to get it back on the road and it be you're daily driver. It will never ride the same, I guarantee you there is more there broken than you think. My truck went up on 2 wheels and did a 180 w/o leaving skid marks and the engine was still running when she stopped moving. That fuel shutoff switch doesn't work too well. That's the 2nd accident I was in and the engine was still on. Fight as hard as you can with the insurance company. You should be able to get your tires back w/ rims if you give them something else, like from the junkyard. I did that. I paid 8500 for my red truck in the gallery almost 2 years ago to the date, and they wrote me a check for 9800 in june. I spent my 18th birthday (may 13th) out in the RAIN taking my truck apart and getting anything I put on it off. How bad does that stink. If they give you a good offer to buy it back, I'd go for it and try to sell it's parts, or use those suspension and such parts on a new truck. The red truck was my first vehicle and it really hurt to have it go but there isn't anything you can do. After a week or two you'll feel better about the situation. I wish you good luck with whatever decision you make.
Primary rig is Green Thunder:
95' F-150 XLT 4x4, 302, 5 spd, MSD 6A, Flowmaster Exhaust, Sunroof, Clear corners w/ Diamond headlights, CD player with 2 10" subs and some 32" BFG Muds .
It all depends on the deal you make - everything has a value; you just have to get them to value it at LESS than you do! Most of the parts you mentioned are cheap at junkyards (except doors & front clips ). I have many of the parts you need in my junkpile.
