So, what do you think of the first ones? I don't want to spend any more than that if it's not necessary. As long as the do decently off road and don't wear out in 20,000 miles...
The 31x10.5 size is generally said to be the largest tire that can go on these trucks w/o rubbing much. Yes, 32's will work and lots of guys here are running them, but they do touch on tight turns. So, that's a good size.
As for those tires, the Goodyears might have more noise going down the highway, but the reviews on them are excellent. I think I'd go to Tirerack.com and see what the thoughts are there.
Same size I have on my 4wd and no rubbing. The Goodyears look pretty nice but I know a few people that say nothing but good about the Generals. Tough choice.
I'm voting for the Goodyears just because of the more agressive tread, if you can find them for a decent price the Wrangler Duratrac is a better choice yet.
Well I have 31x10.50's on my truck right now, and I like the fit and feel of them. And they aren't too tall with my NP435/5.0 EFI/3.50 rear, and I didn't want to go any shorter for sure.
So, they are being installed right now. The Goodyear Wrangler Authority's. I love the tread on them. Vveerryy aggressive for an A/T tire.
Thanks for the responses. I'll let everyone know how they do!
I believe the goodyear's mentioned here, the "authority" is a walmart specific tire. Not as aggressive as the duratrac, but a bit more aggressive than the general listed.
The general grabber AT2 is, however, rated for "severe snow" and can even be studded for even better winter traction. Lacks mud traction though.
It really comes down to how you intend to use the truck. Mostly hiway, with some light offroad, the generals might be fine. Add a bit of mud, and the goodyears start to look a bit better suited.
I'll post up some pictures tomorrow when there is daylight of these tires on my truck. I love the feel of them. My truck is so loud, I barely hear the road noise from them. But I like that road noise, sounds best at 45mph. It's not that loud of road noise, though, but I am inside my truck with a loud exhaust.
The tread looks amazing, I'm highly impressed. So far, I've only driven it on the road. Really good and smooth ride. Much better pulling out traction on 90 degree stop sign turns. My real test will be how well they do in 2x4 off road. 4x4 I've never had a problem even with slick tires. Now, I don't go looking for deep mud holes, but I live on a farm, and there are some messy places out here when it rains.
I am absolutely loving them so far. Bout to go out in the field with a trailer and load up some wood. It's still damp and muddy, so I will be giving two wheel drive a test with a trailer full of wood behind me. Here's the pics I said I'd post:
I'm not sure, I don't know much about wheels. I just know they are pretty shiny, considering they've had the same paint on them for 5 years and never been polished up. I'll read that link in your sig. What's the best way to get paint off wheels? Any good solvents that will do it? Or am I gonna have to scrape it all off?
The answer is in the how-to, and that is paint remover. If they are aluminum you do NOT want to scrape them as it'll scratch them. If they are shiny I'd be on aluminum. Use a magnet on them to find out easily.
Stupid question, but say I get some paint remover. Which I am going to get, I want my wheels looking good. Not chipped paint with brand new tires. So, when I get this or find some out in the garage, I don't need to take the tire off the wheel, do I? It's not going to A) damage the tire or B) stain the tire? I'll test with a magnet today and let ya'll know if it's aluminum or not.
And as for the tires, man these things grip. I trekked through the muddy woods, got a load of wood, and trekked right back out. It was pretty sloppy and I could slide around in the muck, but I never once had to "try" to not get stuck. I just putted around in bull dog.
