alright guys i just bought this thing...first expedition always loved the way they looked i have a newborn on the way so the bronco had to go but i got this thing for a steal. a little story on the truck is it has 150 grand on it roughly. i have codes p0301, and the check engine light flashes. i noticed when it flashes that it seems to miss, which is what the p0301 code calls for(cylinder 1), now the passenger side exhaust manifold has a a hole in it right around number 1 cylinder. obviously the 1st thing to fix would be the manifold, but i was wondering if maybe i had a bad coil pack or plug? any help would be greatly appreciated it doesnt get drove until the misfire is fixed atleast, but this is my only vehicle and i only have so long on asking for rides to work. thanks guys god bless
i was wondering if maybe i had a bad coil pack or plug?
A bad fuel injector will usually not flash the CEL, but a bad plug or COP will.
You said coil pack, do you have the 5.4 or the 4.6 motor? The 1997 4.6 uses coil packs at 1 pack for 2 cylinders. That being said, a bad coil pack would make 2 cylinders misfire. If you have a 5.4 then each cylinder has it's own coil (COP). In this case, your cheapest way out is to first try replacing the rubber boot on the COP. Auto parts stores usually have them for about $3 each.
I wouldn't replace the spark plug just yet. Changing plugs in a 97 motor requires specific steps to avoid the plug blowing out of the head at a later date. I wouldn't touch the plugs until you're ready to replace them all at once. There are a lot of posts in this forum about the spark plug blowout issue with your motor.
Hey guys, I have an 06 with the 5.4L that just did this (Code P0301 cylinder 1 misfire) yesterday while leaving work for lunch. Being new to the world of Ford, what is this boot on the COP?
Well checked my boot out dry and in goos condition so I unplugged the cop and put it back in and ran the same. Bought a new motorcraft cop and runs great. Now onto the manifold!
