need to replace the drivers door keypad

Has anyone had to replace the keypad on the drivers door? My 1-2 button has been giving me a hard time the last few weeks. I was hoping someone would enlighten me on some of the details about replacing on of these keypads..........

Just make a new code not using the 1-2 button

I think they are just double sided taped on, but I'm not 100% sure. I also read that they run by battery, so maybe the battery in yours is starting to go?

I believe there may be two versions. The factory version is hard wired. That is what is on my 2001 Excursion Limited. I don't think that would require anything other than disconnecting the battery and replacing the keypad.

I believe that there is also a dealer installled version that is RF. I'm not sure what it would take to pair a new keypad with an existing receiver.

Hopefully, someone with more knowledge than I will chime in here.

Yep, two versions.

Factory installed is hard wired and installed in the sheetmetal of the door.

The RF version is held on with double sided tape and battery operated, and the battery can't be replaced. If it goes, the whole unit gets replaced. Unless of course you're industrious and figure out how to open it without damaging it, and get a replacement power source for whatever kind of battery is used.

Rich, is the button not making good contact? Do you think if you removed it from the door and maybe tried something like this...

"Applications Circuit breakers, circuits, coin mechanisms, computer components, contacts, electronics, fiberglass, flux removal, sockets, lighting, plastics, nylon, plugs, relay switches, PVC, PTFE, tape heads, terminals."

...that it would help?

Thanks to everyone for the help

Sunline Fan - thanks for the tip, tried this but unfortunately my mastercode has a 1 in it so I was unable to make another code.

Had some time today so I pulled off the door panel and it was all surpisingly simple. My Excursion is a 2000 and the keypad is held onto the door by a metal clip and hardwired to the vehicle. The metal clip came off pretty easily and when I got it apart to clean off the contacts (as Stewart the Mod suggested ) it seems I have been a little overzealous with the powerwasher at the car wash. There was plenty of moisture in there which resulted in a bunch of build up and gunk forming to prevent a good contact. All is good to go and it took me about an hour from start to finish......

Thanks again !!!!

on another note - after removing the door panel and seeing how easy it would be for someone to break into my vehicle - I am definitely considering installing one of those Jimmi' Jammer deals.

Hi Everyone! I got locked out of my 01 Sport Trac last night at Wal-Mart, and it was damn cold! lol. I put my keys in the center console, as I usually just rely on my keyless entry to get back in the truck. Surprise! It crapped out and I didnt know until it was cold and windy. I have scoured the forums, and I don't quite see my issue, so I will just put my thoughts out there for potential feedback. My keypad DOES light up, when touching any button OTHER than the 9-0 button. It doesnt do anything at all. No lights, no unlock. Every other button on the pad turns on the keypad and interior lamps, so I believe it is the keypad needing to be replaced. I removed it today, which was simple, and took it apart. Everything appears clean, but I don't see any power where the 9-0 button contacts the internal circuit board, as I do on the other buttons. My question is, do people here agree it's most likely the pad itself? Also, I can't seem to find one online, new or used. Any leads on where to find one? I do like the keyless entry, until I am locked out!! Thanks everyone!

Sport Trac? Explorer? I don't know if the keypads are the same or not but an explorer forum may be a better option to find a definitive answer.
There are a few with both, I have an explorer but nowhere close and I can't check.

About pulling the keypad are the lights inside easy to access? I want to change them to blue leds.

With your new excursion, why not add it to you list?

Wrong moderator.

Tor is the one with the new to him Ex!

Besides, that was two years ago. I stopped procrastinating earlier this year and with Pete's help (Duck Fan) the jammers were installed.

Just to update my post, you can change the battery in the RF version.
