I have acquired an E4OD [1996] to complete the 4 wheel drive conversion on my 1995 F350. In preparing it for the install I have discovered that the front input shaft just slides out, forward. Is this normal? Is there a keeper or clip not doing its job? Should I be replacing the front seal that the rearward section of the torque converter rides in?

If you're talking about the center shaft that's about 3/4 inches in diameter,, Yes that's normal...
On the seal, it will NEVER be easier to put a fresh one in there...
Put a new one in for sure. And be careful when you put the converter back in the tranny. Had aneighbor kid help me one time and he gouged the seal badly with the snout on the tc.Got it all together and had to take it all back apart.PITA.A little TF on the seal to help the snout slide in easier .
Yes the shaft sliding out is normal nothing retains it, and yes you should replace those seals. Converter pump and converter lock-up seals both (lock-up seal is "Teflon" (that split you see in it is normal), located in groove forward end of pump shaft) I'd do both while your there.
Also worth mentioning that you be sure when you put the TC back in the trans it drops in in three distinct steps. When converter is properly seated into the trans the TC center hub will be ¼" below the matting surface as measured off the bell housing face via a straight edge for reference.
