In my 89 bronco with the 4.9, five speed and manual t-case. The tranfer case went out. The front axel doesnt spin. Im assuming this means its a chain driven case? The 2h works, is it ok to drive it till i get it fixed? I am sorry that i do have a model number for the t-case, im looking for it now.
Your truck probably have a BW1356 tranfer case, try to disengage and you should be able to use the truck with no issues whatsoever, you just won't have 4WD. If you're low on funds, go to a junk yard, you can find plenty of those for $100-200.
Ok. At highway speed when i mash the clutch, you can hear and feel it jaring back there! Is it safe to drive? It will be next thursday before i can work on it
That model transfer case uses a chrome steel shaft that runs through a simple seal and into the case. This shaft operates the sector gear. If water gets past the seal, the magnesium case dissolves and lets the sector gear **** to the side rendering some or all transfer case functions inoperable. If it gets bad, the transfer case will drop into neutral until you stop and cycle the shift lever. A machine shop can re-bush the case but I ended up replacing the case half and the planetary around 250k miles.
Ok. Well crap! I was hoping it was a chain breaking. But this morning it jared again and i knew it was something else.
One more thing, when you're in there, if you have someone with a mig welder handy, add a 1 inch wide tab to your oil pump arm, it tends to wear a notch in the case half.
If you have time, you can fix the case half with jb weld to keep the shaft in the right position. Dig out the corrosion and put some jbweld in the gap, lightly grease the sector shaft, install and hold it back tight with wire. After 24 hours, remove the sector shaft, put in a new seal and you're good for a few years.
There were only two models available, NP-208 or BW 1356 (in later year Broncos)
The NP has a big starred circle on the case towards the rear with an NP in the center. It stands out.
Fast_st, thank you for that info. Thank all of yall. I believe ill just replace it, then rebuild the old one. Is there a stronger t-case i could look for that wont be a total cluster to pit in?
Well your stocker has lasted this long and likely you're not dealing with a strength issue, just wear and tear and possibly corrosion. Transfer cases are super simple, to work on but yeah, swap in a used one would be fast and cheap, make sure the shift arm has zero wobble in it.
