I bought a oem rebuilt alt once and put it on my truck got about 30 miles from home 9:00 at night in the winter pouring rain towing a 10k tractor behind me and had to get towed home for a nice $360 that great
Thats why you find a local reputable shop to get the job done...I would not mess with a rebuild unless I knew who was doing the work, quality of components used, and what experience they had. My rebuild works good...and the people who did the work do class "A" work and stake their livelyhood on their work. OEM rebuilders are pretty much "faceless" and will get business regardless of whether or not they provide you with a bad unit. At some point it comes back to bite them in the **** if they turn out too much junk...but if they stay within an "acceptable" failure rate they continue on. All rebuilds that I have ever had done in this manner have provided good service.
WOW only 2 days old I think its a battery or wire connection
I would definatly be checking other possibilities first B4 alt replacement again
yes try that hydrometer there cheap
ok so I did the hydro thing every cell on both batteries were above 1.210, but i disconnected both batteries and put the charger on and passenger side was at 95% before charging and driver batt was only at 81% before charging.
with a multimeter i was getting exactly what my scangauge is reading so I made sure that the volts were going to the driver side battery and I'm getting 14v with driver unhooked so that means cross over power wire is good. I tried to check ac volts and i get 26 but I don't believe I'm putting it on correct setting. but at autozone there tester sasy 10milivolts ??? I proceeded to take loose both batt connections and the small batt wire coming from alt loose and scraped them clean and put no-ox on all + connections. I only ran it for a few minutes but no light so I am going to take it in a bit for another long drive and see what happens
Thanks for all the suggestions oh and going to order new pigtail for alt just to be sure.
Well I removed alternator and had it double checked it tested good but out of chance I talked the parts manager into switching out the unit and so far I have driven around 50 miles and no light so let's keep our fingers crossed
...
One thing I have noticed about that battery light if its on somethings wrong a wire connection Battery or alternator. But that light is very accurite IMO.
...
Good point! Haven't heard of anyone fixing the light circuit yet!
Sounds like ya might have it fixed Henry, congrats!
Blade to answer your question yes I unhooked the crossover wire when Hydro tested
And thanks rusty I hope I have it fixed but I've never heard of an alt testing good yet be bad. It's almost like the alt itself was losing ground internally
Its weird thing about that Battery light it almost seems more Accurite than any tester out there
Im not shure exactly all what it monitors but if its on somethings wrong
when my battery light was on I tested all kinds of stuff Cleaned every Terminal & connection with my dremal tool and like you nothing really stood out and said Im Broke Battery or Alternator or wire
as the summer wore on and it got hotter the only thing I noticed was it didnt put out as much volts kinda slowly on the decline so I figured time for the DC Power alt and so far so Good.
If it ever goes out again check into the DC Power I hope i DONT have to change my alt again for a long time

1/100th of a volt incase you wanted to know basically zero
