I bought the sinister coolant filter kit and had a shop install it for me while my truck was there for some other work. I forgot to ask for the instructions from them and so I just had MKM email me a pdf copy. I need to change the first filter out now, but nowhere in the instructions does it say what the left hex nut is for on the main assembly housing. The filter is on super tight so I'm wondering if that nut is a lock/drain that needs to be removed in order to remove the actual filter.
The filter housing has four threaded ports...two for coolant in, two for coolant out; but only one of each is needed/used. Gives some flexibility depending on where your filter is placed; the other two ports will have plugs screwed in to keep the fluid from leaking. With that said, sounds like they over tightened the filter when they installed it. Might try a filter strap wrench to get it to loosen up.
Sounds good and I appreciate the quick response. I had swung over to my fire house during lunch today to get the instructions and switch it out, but like I said there was nothing in them about the extra ports so I wanted to make sure I got the correct info before doing anything. I'll have to swing by there after work again to change them out.
Sounds good. Did you just pour the coolant from the used filter back into the new one also?
I didn't, treated it like the used oil from the oil filter or fuel from the filters...it's dirty. So I dumped mine into the collection container and got rid of it. Just added some coolant to the degas bottle after I restarted the truck.
So since the coolant filter holds a little bit of the coolant in it at all times and would therefore decrease the level in the degas bottle, did you account for that and add more coolant to bring the level back up?

Yip, about a pint or so will cover what you loose when you replace the filter. I waited until the truck had time to refill the filter before I refilled the degas just to make sure I've got the right amount in the truck.
Ok. Cause I noticed mine was just above the Min line before it was installed and now its about a half inch shy of the line. I bought the truck used and its almost at 100K anyway, so I was planning on flushing the coolant soon also. Did you add straight coolant or did you mix it even though its such a small amount?
If your running Ford Gold, pretty sure it only comes 50/50 premixed. I know what I've got at the house does...so I just pour it straight out of the bottle into the degas.

Ford Gold comes in the concentrate form also. If you use the 50/50, you will not have enough antifreeze in the cooling system. The block retains water when flushing.
I just returned from Atlanta and had Powerstroke Specialists, do the EGR delete kit, oil cooler, coolant flush & fuel filters. Excellent job....Those guys are the best. Bill did recommend the coolant filter kit, but did not name any plave, in particular, to purchase it. Does anyone have any recommendations??
