Flowmaster & Resonance Chamber

I just had a Flowmaster 40 installed yesterday, and noticed that just before the tailpipe becomes visible there is a piece that looks like a muffler. Asked the muffler guy about this and he stated it was a resonance chamber. For those of you that have the flowmaster did you have this removed or leave it in place? Was wondering if I would maybe get a little better sound if I removed it.

Also don't know that I believe a muffler guy and no idea what it has to do with a resonance chamber but he made mention of the 5.4 engine going to 4cyl operation when on the freeway?? Any thoughts on this?

Dalavar - welcome to FTE. If you need anything, feel free to PM me. As far as the bits and pieces to your exhaust go, I would probably leave it as is - Flowmaster has been designing exhaust systems for a *long* time, and there's a good chance that the item in question may keep the whole muffler from making all sorts of racket (not the good kind). It's called reverse engineering - you finish the product, find a problem when you test it, then add something to fix that problem. Flowmaster might've found that the 40 series had a bad resonance/vibration problem, and as a result, added in the little gizmo that you're asking about.

As far as the 4cyl operation, the only time I've heard of the 5.4L doing this is in the event you overheat - it shuts down 4cylinders and uses them as air pumps to supplement the cooling. At least that's what my '99 owner's manual tells me - there may be some new feature in the later years.

All they did was torch the original muffler off, put on the flowmaster with a small extension pipe and then weld all the other factory pipe back together with the flowmaster.

The part I am talking about isn't part of the flowmaster, it is orginal equipment that is on the tailpipe after the factory muffler and we just left it on there. It's about 12-16 inches from the end of the tailpipe and is a cylinder about 5 inches in diameter, the muffler shop said it is a straight flow resonance chamber??

Was just wondering if most ppl had the pipe after the muffler re-piped or just left the stock pipe behind the muffler on.

I just installed a Flow Master Force II cat back system yesterday on my 2000 Expy, it has a deep, loud tone. I have posted pics of what a full system looks like.

I just ordered a Force II this morning - is it crazy loud at highway speeds? I've heard that it's not too boomy when you're cruising; I'm worried about having it drone in my ear nonstop. I do understand that it's going to have more *****, but I don't want to sound like a ricer.

How do you like yours so far?

I didn't check my stock pipe, but I think I may know what you're talking about - is it just kind of a funky off shoot, or an "appendix" that doesn't seem to serve a purpose? If so, I've seen this plenty of times - goes back to the "reverse engineering" remark.

I don't think it will make much of a difference whether or not it's there - it's original purpose was probably to silence a funky frequency or whistle from the stock setup. Changing any part of the exhaust will in turn change the whole airflow, so the anti-resonance thingamajig is useless. Besides, your new muffler probably covers up any nasty frequencies.

I wouldn't worry about it - if it's running well and sounds good, then forget about the thing and enjoy your vehicle!

Take care!

For me, the pipe is a little on the boomy side, but it might just be my truck. For some reason my Expy is the loudest on I have ever riden in, I get lots of wind and road noise compared to other expy's I have riden in. Lets just say I can hear the new pipe with the windows rolled up allmost as well as I can with the windows down.

That sounds pretty loud. My interest in an improved exhaust is performance and/or mileage, not sound or appearance. If you can't hear your stereo anymore, I don't find that to be an attractive feature.

I still think most of the problem is just that my Expy is a lot louder inside than other Expeditions I have driven. This pipe does have a very deep tone that seams to be amplified in wide open cabin of the Expy. I would not call it objectionably loud, but it is by no means "mellow". It all boils down to a matter of personal tastes. I have the feeling that my wife is going to strongly object to the sound (I am going to keep her out of the truck as long as I can).

Matt,
You WILL LIKE IT.I have had mine on for over a year now and I still like the sound. Not to loud. It is a more throaty sound until you MASH the pedal down then the note picks up. To "REALLY" hear it you need someone to drive your truck past as you stand on the sidewalk. It was a really simple install and took about a 1/2 hour. The hardest part was getting the stock hangers out of the rubber (?). I had to spray them with lubricant to get them out.

Sounds good - I sort of had my doubts (I don't want to sound like a ricer), but I'm not gonna sweat it.

Thanks for the input!
