Truck Shopping

The misses and I have been discussing the pros and cons of doing some upgrades on our 66 F100 CC or buying one with the work already done that we want.

I want to be able to tow the two Harleys in an enclosed trailer at highway speed, have an automatic, ps, pdb, and air.

Shopping ebay and CL nearly everything I see in a 65/66 F100/F250 is way overpriced or has had hideous modifications that destroy the entire purpose of wanting to own one of these trucks.

I see some nice trucks for sale in Phoenix. Ive considered buying one of those and having it shipped to Georgia.

The current truck runs well, but doesn't suit our needs or desires. Do I spend the time and money to make it fit what we want, or do I sell it and buy one ready to go?

I really don't want to spend more than 10k on this. Ive seen some nice 94 F150 Lightnings for 5-6k and have been tempted to go that route.

IMO: P/S, P/D/B, Factory A/C: 1975/76 F150 300/360/390 / 1977/79 F150 300 / 1988/96 F150 300/351W

460's suck gas, were not available after 1976 F100, not available after 1979 F150.

1977/82 351M/400 were smogged up turds, 1980/86 F150 with stubby front end & 1977/81 Courier like grille are fugly. 1997/2003 F150 with drooping snout are hideous.

Super Cabs introduced in 1974, F150's in 1975.

A couple years back I felt I needed to make a bus. decision to show up at the customers with a better looking truck. I bought a 06 F150. It has changed my thinking on old trucks. My 66 F100 will pull about anything hooked to it. There is a photo in my gallery with my trailer hooked to it and a 88 4wd on it. I had it weighed at a local feed store with truck scale, and it was over 10,500lbs total. It will pull it 75-80 mph no problem. No diesel will leave it unless it keeps rolling while I refill the gas tank.

The 06 has so much more room in the cab, better seats, quieter, smoother ride, 4.6 is adequate. I have only towed with it once, rented a Uhaul trailer and towed a 94 Ranger that was broke down, no concerns there.

If you are into old Ford trucks you will want to keep one, but for what you described above, I think I would do some serious shopping to see what the $10,000.00 would buy.

In addition to the Harleys we also have two 65 Mustangs that take up to much money and room.

As a homeowner its handy to own a truck.

Ive been riding a motorcycle since 74.

I have owned a Mustang for most of my life.

I really should let one of the hobbies go.

If I go with a newer truck its a 94 Lightning or a 04+. Those are the only ones Im remotely interested in. I had a 09 longbed F150 XL, best truck I have ever owned. I also had a 04 F150 XLT, hated it.

Additionally in '04, Ford offered the F150 "Heritage" which was a droopy snout 1997/2003.

The body style changed in 2009, but the largest V8 thru 2010 was the anemic 5.4L 3 valve.

5.4L went bye bye in 2011, replaced by the 5.0L 4 valve Coyote that'll pass everything but a gas station.

A regular cab longbed XL with the 5.4 is a nice truck.

Very hard to find.

I have found a few very nice, low mileage 93-94-95 Lightnings that meet the 10k price range. Im leaning that way.

I will have to sell the F100 or one of the Mustangs, I don't have room to park them all, plus the insurance is getting spendy having full coverage on everything.
