My business partner has a 2008 6.4L that is completely stock. He doesn't take care of his engine as well as most of us. (Reg oil changes, checking fluids regularly, etc). He's always complaining of frequent regens, poor mileage, etc. Over the past few weeks, I'e noticed a slight coolant smell after he shuts his truck down. About 3-4 weeks ago, I advised him of his low coolant. He added it to the mid point of the cold fill line and I looked today and he's down about 2" below the low cold fill. Given that, I don't think all of his issues are pointing to just one problem. Here's what is going on:
1. Drinking coolant
2. I noticed oil spitting out of the oil filter on top of the engine. Not at idle, just drips on front axle and around filter cap.
3. Very Frequent regens, 3-4 x's per week with minimal mileage.
4. Has reported heavy white smoke a few times from tail pipe.
5. Strong coolant odor after running
I can not find any leaks anywhere. But the odor tells me it may be hitting hot equipment and evaporating. Degas bottle is clean, except small residue which he is sure he spilled filling up a few weeks ago. Tail pipe is clean. Just had one EGT sensor replaced on DPF. DPF was completely replaced at 5,000 miles. Truck has 60,000 on it now. Has newest flash. Have not checked DTC's yet.
In this case it is both but since the EGR and coolers are part of the engine it would be covered...it that is the case.
One other possiblity might be the front engine cover..it might be cavitated but if there have been no other coolant issues or radiator repairs then that may not be the case.
I have had a couple develop a pin hole in the reservoir. It would only spit coolant at certain times. You had to be lucky to catch it. Ran us ragged until we did.
I also had a tstat go out on one and cause frequent regens. I am not sure why that is but Senix may know. I usually just read here to see what y'all run into to help me with what I may run into.
The dealer called him today to advise him of a radiator leak. They're replacing the radiator and hoses. They didn't find anything else yet. They're going to double check the DPF but the radiator is all that seems to be wrong.
