smog test

well my truck is due for its smog test - truck runs great so not worried about a pass. however i was speaking with the testing mechanic and he tells me that because i have a 6.0 in a 350 chassis - i need the full deal on the test which means in part that he takes the truck to full throttle for 5 seconds in park. this ticks me off a little because if i had the 250 chassis the truck would get a visual only for 1/3 the price. My question is what is the rev limiter set to and what is the redline on these motors? it just makes me queesy to think hes gonna jump in my truck and plant the pedal to the floor - i may have to go for a walk lol

You'll be fine. Mine is a 03 and it is set at 4,250. I think later models are set at 4,000.

They have the owner do the snap test in wa.to many testers not knowing what they're doing here created some problems.5 sec seems like a long time to hold it down.I held mine for no longer than 2,it got to maybe 3k rpm.

Hmm. That sounds stupid as hell, free revs are worthless in terms of opacity readings an accurate reading would be under load. When they do mine here they tie the truck down to a dyno, put it in gear and get on it pretty good (not floored though) through all the gears. I just had it done last week, whole test lasted less than 20 seconds and after the BS $70 fee I was outa there.

i think what burns me the most is the fact that if i had a 250 not a 350 - it would only get a visual - let it idle for 3 mins - if it doesnt smoke it passes. Its virtually the same truck, but i have to pay $115 vs $35 for a visual. My local government hard at work.

Well Komrad, if it makes you feel any better our govmt is just a few steps behind yours and catching up quick. My state did away with emissions all together a few years ago and then the new Gov. brought them back as a revenue generator.
