Interesting article in Truck Trend about the 2012 Ford Ranger.

Exciting news...but not for us in Canada and the USA. From what I understand it is available in 180 other countries....but not over here.

A diesel ranger would be neat, Id buy one of them, as long as ford never came out with a diesel f150.

I really dislike rangers though, and Im glad they arent coming here.

Why do you dislike Rangers ?

I've always thought that they fill an important market niche, for those who want/need a small, reasonably priced utility truck.

Rangers seem to fill these criteria very well.

Ive had alot of buddies with rangers over the years, and only the guys on this website seem to have good luck with them. Ive had to walk way to many times due to this or that while riding in a ranger!

I find they are small, yet dont get good mileage. In fact most people Ive talked to get similar or better mileage in an f150, then they have in a ranger.

Lastly is the quality has always seemed to me to be poor in the ranger line. Compared to some of the competitors they seem tinny, the interiors are of poor finish, just seem to be generally "cheap".I know owners on this site disagree (on a ford truck enthusiast site, whoda thunk it?

haha_), but all the personal research, and experience I have from non ford blue-bleeders have really helped my dislike to them.

To me they are a waste of steel, and apparantly the market situation over here isnt as hot as one may think, otherwise there is no way ford would let that market slide.

I also dont meant any disrespect to anyone that has one, to those guys I have lots of sympathy haha

A neighbor had a '91 Ranger with a 5 speed std. and the 2.3 liter four cylinder. He used it for light hauling and bringing in firewood a couple of times a year...also was a commuter for him. It was very reliable and durable, over an extended period of years.

With that powertrain (2.3) it was certainly no 428 Cobra Jet, but it was fine in traffic and I think the mileage was not bad. I realize you're probably referring to the larger engine options...the 3.0 liter and 4.0 liter V6's. I don't have any experience with Rangers so equipped.

I don't have one, but the extended cab, with a 5 speed std., 2.3, 4 cylinder or the 4.0 L. V6 and 4WD have always had an appeal for me, particularly with the price Ford has offered over the past couple of years.

I think as long as Ford offered a basic, small, very reasonably priced pickup that was focused on the commuter/utilitarian market they had sales they could count on, with the old style Ranger.

I often wondered why they didn't offer a small diesel, as per your point, but it may have been too pricey an option for the North American market. Don't know.

I think that right now Ford may find themselves in a bit of a dilemma. On one hand they have the F 150 with the new powerful...yet relatively economical V6's....with these, do they need a smaller pickup ?

Also the mid size pick up competitors seem to be slipping away...re: Dodge Dakota, although GM, Toyota and Nissan...also Honda (although they are expensive and 'different' ) are still there.

But in the end, Ford seems to be doing very well sales-wise and with a range of full size pickups from basic F series V6's...to the one ton + , DRW Diesel F350/450 pickups and everything covered...in between.

Maybe Ford marketers feel they can cover all the needs with the F series and don't need a small truck. They could well be right, going by their light truck sales.

You bring up some very valid points Less.

I think however that the market is calling out for more f150s. People (other then just me

) are realizing that the ranger isnt much better at anything then the f150, and the f150 being alot more capable of a truck. Now that of course is my theory, but it seems to hold a little water!

The "small truck" market is definately different then it used to be, and I just dunno if the ranger would make it, with what seems to be popular now, whether that is a good or bad thing.
