Truth be told I wouldn't want that gussied up Rolls....probably not the modified Raptor either....think I would prefer something like a nice, comfortable Lincoln...easier on my old bones.
I hear ya Less. At the end of the day they're both extremes... Truth be told, I'm happy with whats parked in my garage.
Exactly, extremes are hard to live with. That idea first popped into my mind around 1969. A buddy and I took out a '69 Chevy Nova with the 396/375 hp engine and 4 speed muncie.
These 375/396's were rumoured to be under rated, had solid lifters, big Holley carb, radical cam.
It idled like a tank engine out of tune and I think had 4.10 gears. It would come on the cam at about 3500 rpm and start fishtailing and had a very loud, hard sound. The effort to depress the clutch pedal felt like I needed to use two feet.
Even though I was a young guy....it was just too much power, too much maintenance (mechanical lifters, etc.), too loud (it would wake the dead)...I thought great car for the weekend....but too hot too live with, day in, day out.
Too much power, is there such thing?! Old Hot Rodders say...too much power is just about right !
Im kinda into power, seems hard to think that I could get enough of it! That chevy nova would have been a hell of a ride!
That Nova 396/375 hp was quite a ride...still clear in my aging mind after decades. There was a match race at the drags back then at the local strip. Two local guys who were regarded as having two of the hottest cars out here...back then.... had a contest of acceleration at the strip .
One was a Dodge R/T with the 426 Hemi/ 425 hp...the other...a Nova with the 396/375 hp rat motor. Both drivers were well regarded as racers, both cars were in top tune and remember back then street tires were bias belted and in a word...traction was 'lousy'..with these tires.
The race was close...in the low 12's....(remember this was 40 odd years ago)...the Nova got the Hemi by a round a tenth...it was that close.
But other then these two cars....I never had a ride in a Hemi, but did in 440 six packs and Ford Cobra Jet with a 428 FE with the drag pack...think that included some engine tweaks over the regular 428 CJ, locker axle, around a 4.30 rear axle ratio.I had a ride in a 428 CJ , 4 speed top loader...on the street....the acceleration and the power was astounding.
Just going by the seat of my pants back then....I would have to say I think a CJ 428 with the drag pak and a Nova 396/375 would be very close.
I agree with you prep. I know you're a shade older than me, but I think you can agree that as vehicle enthusiasts, it sucks to have grown up in an age where young guys think a modded car is a civic or sunfire with peel and stick hood scoops and a coffee can muffler. Throw on a set of seatcovers for about 10hp, K&N drop in air filter, and man, there were some hot rides turtling around, sounding like pissed off mosquitos...
