We have an 03 6.0. When it runs it runs great. Started having issues with it cutting out, like a missfire/transmission slip (electrical issue not transmission). Got worse and then no start (engine would not turn over). Replaced batteries and removed an antitheft device. Seemed fine for a short time then engine would miss and trans slip (again electrical) when turning left. Can hear occasionly a clicking noise around the relays. It has an aftermarket radio, thinking about removing it also.
Now when driving at speed, again misses and trans slip feeling (Electrical). Started to drop off at shop. Took the guys my personal truck to use today and drove this one back to office. Ran great all the way back (50 miles).
When you do get it going it seems fine for the day. Worse sysptoms first thing in morning. Weather is colder.
Is there a relay that would not even let engine turn over that is located on fuse panel? Thought I would replace this first and see if the relay is getting bad. Any thoughts is appreciated. We cant seem to replicate in our shop and dont want to leave at dealer for something that they cant replicate also.
Managed to get the symptons to recreate for me. Engine reves up and feels like transmission disengages. Relays are making noise. couldnt find out which one. Must be the pcm relay I think. Is it possible that the relay is bad or is it something causing the realy to be overloaded?
When you are driving and give it gas it FEELS like the transmission slips. It is not a transmission problem (if that make sense). It feels like it disengages the transmission, when it kicks back in it is a solid feel. Then the relays make a clicking noise. There was a bad coolant hose I replaced and I have not checked the level. I would believe that it is low, not sure if that would be a contributing factor. Engine revs during this sympton. Driving this morning it was cutting out ever so slightly (like a slight miss). Going to take to dealer today and let them have it sit overnight and then drive in morning when cold. With it being random I find it hard to believe they will find and fix it without it being broke.
On another note, my truck (2004 6.0) started missing while driving 70+ and giving it gas. It cleared up after awhile and then after I gave it to my guys they drove it to job site and said it did the same thing on the way home. Any ideas on this? Thanks
When the truck had the first problem of no start (key on lights up did not turn over at all). We tried everything and then finally it tried to start with dead batteries. Jumped it over and could not get it going. Ran out of time and sent guys out and had it towed in to Tyler Ford. Asked for diagnositic to be ran. $200.00+ for this was the reply. Left it with them. They called and said batteries need to be replaced and that the hoses and coolant needed to be flushed. $2000+. Said no thank you and went and got the truck. Picked up two new batteries at Sams and installed these. Managed to get sympton of no start again and this is why I removed the aftermarket alarm system etc. That fixed the no start issue (key on lights up did not turn over). Now it fires up everytime. Just seems to have an electircal issue running.
When I picked it up I asked "did you check it for codes?" Answer was yes and no codes. I don't believe them. I have a delaer in Frankston that I think has a better diesel department. This is where I think I will drop it off today for them to have in the morning. Problem seems to be worse when cold.
Hopefully they can find a code and we can fix it. Thank you
Called dealer and they can not get to truck for three weeks. I can't afford that at all as this is a work truck. Any suggestion? Im going to test the FICM and see what that does next. Will let you know.
There were multiple items on the list that I have fixed on my truck. After two weeks of swapping parts and pulling the engine apart, I finally bought a ScanGaugeII. With the ability to now monitor the sensors in real time, coupled with great advice from the forum, I pinpointed the no start condition in two days. A scanner will more than pay for itself the first time you don't have to take your truck to a dealer.
Thanks, I appreciate it and I agree a scanner would be nice. However, I am not having a no start issue as stated. It was a symptom and I believe that removing the anti-theft that was poorly installed fixed that as it now starts everytime. It now has what some would call a miss and then it seems to disengage the transmission and the engine momentarly revs up then the transmission kicks in again (random, sometimes it runs perfect). You will get a clicking noise under dash like a relay going out.
Any suggestions? I need to maybe post elsewhere as it seems I am not getting any responses?
The FICM has a relay there. I think it is #304. Have you checked the FICM voltage while cranking and while running? It should not drop below 45v. Anything less than that indicates repairs are needed. I had battery/alternator issues a while back that was causing similar issues. The FICM needs consistent voltage for logical power as well. There are some simple tests you can perform without a scanner. Look for FICM write ups in the tech folder. I was able to diagnose and repair mine before any major failures happened. Solved my surging issues as well.
Bought a actron scanner. No codes. Replaced the relays and still have the problem. I bet I own 6 multimeters and not a single one here! Bought another and will check the ficm when truck is cooled down tomorrow. Drove it to autozone and same symptons, engine will rev while you are driving (transmission disengages so engine revs with no load) then it re-engages. Clicking noise under dash. Thought I could feel it on the relay the first time, could not the second time.
The relay that was clicking is the reverse light relay. It seems that maybe the truck thinks it is shifting into reverse??!! Would this cause these issues?
Is there wiring in the steering column that I should look at? The truck acts like it shifts into neutral when the problem happens and the relay starts clicking. Also, when you put it into 3 gear it stays in second only. Maybe the shift linkage? Once again, it is worse when you are turning left.
Kinda hoping there are some peeps on here with more feedback. So far very disapointed in responses. Aren't there some experts on here?
When you were having no start issues could you wiggle the gearshift lever and get it to start that way
I know the ScanGauge will report transmission range
And I dont know how to check it with a DVM
Let me check for its location on my computer I might have a diagram
You also need to relize these are Very Complex trucks and without some kinda scanner all any of us can do is guess and then all your doing is changing parts Most folks wont Start telling you to replace this and that Without verifying a bad part thru Diagnostic trouble shooting verifacation
