300 or 302 rebuild?

I am just beginning the organization process of rebuilding an engine. I have a pulled 302 out of an LTD with C4. I have a non-original 300 in my truck now.

I want to have an automatic, with air conditionining, power steering, powerbrakes, etc. (I have the donor from a 78f150 to do this).

My stepdad wants me to rebuild the 300. I want the 302. I currently have 3.75 gears, but have access to 3.20 or 3.25s and plan on using the lower gears.

What, in your opinions, would be the best route to go? I plan on using my truck as a comfortable daily driver, no hotrodding (unless for fun), and use the truck as a truck...some light hauling and pulling.

Thanks for any help.

If you want to put your foot in it once in a while go with the 302.

well, the 300 will have more torque, meaning better take off. The 302 more horses at rpm....decisions decisions.

Thanks

300 or 302 rebuild?

My experience with the 300 (efi) in my truck is it is a real gutless wonder. It does a pretty decent job pulling, but I get my doors blown off every time i line em up with someone else. It sucks just as much gas as a small v-8. Are either of your motor options fuel injected? It definately adds power but sucks-a-mundo when it doesn't work right.

my 2 cents

I'd rebuild the 300. If you're going to "use the truck as a truck", you want the pulling torque. The 3.75's will help there, but will limit your highway cruising speed and mileage unless you have an overdrive. If you're going to build a drag racer, go with the 302, a looser converter, and forget about towing anything.

My daily driver is an '84 F-150 with a 302/auto and it wouldn't pull a wet postage stamp off an envelope. I'd much rather have a 300 and manual transmission for light duty truck use.

Naturally the mileage will be about the same for 300 ci vs. 302 ci; they are the same size engine. There might even be a little improvement with the six (less surface area for friction on 6 bigger cyls. vs. 8 smaller ones?)

300 or 302 rebuild?

again....I want a comfortable daily driver. I wont haul anything much more than a couch or furniture if friends need help moving etc.

Also, I want power steering, air conditioning, and the power brakes...do those things matter when deciding on which engine to rebuild?

I plan on running the c4 with the 3.20/ 3.25s no matter which way I go.

I checked some prices last night, and it appears that the 302 is much more affordable (We all want affordability) to rebuild.

Again, some more opinions and help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to all those who have helped all ready!
