Diesel Mechanic

Im 17 and am looking to go to collage for being a diesel mechanic. So is there jobs out there like what everone is saying. From what I have been told, alot of the mechanics are old and starting to go out of date with how the trucks are changing and opening up alot of new jobs. Is this true?? Or is collages and other people telling me lies to get me to go to school there?

Sorry if this isnt the correct forum by the way. Any opinions appreciated! Josh

I'm not an expert in the field but make sure to look at the cost of the college and how it's structured.

Don't hope on just getting grants/loans and such that the school might use to entice you and make sure it's a reputable organization with accredited programs.

I went to school like you are thinking. They can give you a lot of good information. After 2 years of school I got my first job as a mechanic and then had to learn to be one. Good pay but not when you relise the tools you have to buy. The last shop I was at ran a inventory for insurance reasons on our tools and the avage new replacement cost was 45,000$. and every time you loose one you just lost most of your days pay. You have to buy top tools, cheap ones may work at home but not every day shop wise. The first 30 years I enjoyed the chalenge and learned every day. Nothing goes perfect and one O sh-- wipes out a lot of atta boys. The next 15 years was not as much fun. It is heavy hard work in the equipment field and you are not what you use to be. It is a good trade and I kept working for 45 years but maby a electricion or plumber tools cost less and not quite so heavy. I could be wrong. Just my 2 cents worth.

I was a diesel truck mechanic for 25 years, I agree with larry. Let me say that I enjoyed my work, very satisfieing work, but most of the parts are very heavy, and it tends to take a toll on your back, knees etc... The reason that it is a good field for a young person to get into is the fact that most diesel mechanics are getting older and not many young people want to get dirty, work with heavy items and put out all that money in tools when there are much cleaner and possibly higher paying jobs. just my 2 cents.
