I found out that my local community college was offering a Diesel mechanics class. It covers all the basics, preventative maint., diesel history, how diesel engines work, etc. Of course I had to sign up for it. We have met two times so far, and I have another class tonight. I have learned so much already, it's crazy. What's also nice is that we are allowed to bring are trucks to class and work on them inside the nice heated garage I have gotten the chance to do an oil change, and I get to change my fuel filters tonight. It's cool b/c the teacher has everyone gather around and watch, that way everyone learns how to do work on different makes, etc. The teacher knows a butt load about diesel. He is retired from the military, where he was a mechanic. He also has every certification you could think of. What is also nice is that he knows pretty good amount about every make, so he just doesn't focus on Ford, chevy or dodge. Just thought I'd let ppl know about the class so they could check with their local schools to see if it's being offered........
We had those in the Service.. Sprocket was the place to go.. Was a 40 bay station with lifts and tool rental for everything from engine rebuilds to simple jobs.. They had Military Mechanics on location to help out and also Civilians who were ASE Certified.. I loved that place, spent an awful lot of time there working on my old F150..
Good luck in the class and learn TONS It'll save you in the end.. I love doing all my own work now.. With the lift in the shop now I'm about to go mad crazy on stuff..
Tippman where ya from? I got to wayne state university and i know they have technical classes like this but im looking for something more hands on like the one your in. Is this a trades school? or a university? Whats the name of the class?
I've had the local Highschool call me several times asking if I would stop by once a week to kinda give an over view on turning wrenches. I've had to decline because my business is just not ready for me to be out of the shop during business hours. I did mention that I would possibly take on a student for a couple hours a day pending some very strict guidelines and the parents signing an affidavid stating that I'm not responsible in any shape or form. Fortunatly, nothing has become of it - I just don't have time to commit to something like that.
Perhaps in the future, when I can add another tech I'll be able to get involved more.
