I have a sound thta seems to originate from my suspension. I t used to be more subtle, but has grown louder reently. When I turn at any more than a very gente turn, it makes a clank-thud -- almost like suspension parts (springs, shocks, control arms...?)that are loose are banging. My truck is a 1996 model just shy of 100k. My shocks are around 25k miles old, seem to still work well and appear to be on tight (I will make a better inspection), my transmission supports seems to be tightened down solid. I am very green in the area of suspension work. Car is running well, basically. I did have a mechanic tell me a year ago that my from bushings (don't ask me what particular one) needed replacing.
search this site and you'll find several posts on this subject. On my rig I eventually located the noise to be comming from the transmission crossmember. The bolts which held the tranny to the crossmember were loose and any time I turned, stopped, or sped up it made a "thunk". Tightned the bolts and it went away.
Check the twin-I beam radius arm bushings for collapse. You will not get a lot of noise when the rubber bushing fails except over bumps, but a failed bushing will cause a lot of damage to the radius arm shaft. Ford replacement bushings are twice as beefy as the originals. The radius bushing mounting washers will appear off centered if they are worn. The left bushing on my 95 F150 failed at 30K miles, but it is the right bushing that is frequently checked due to proximity to hot cat.
those stock rubber bushings on suspension only last about 5 - 7 years, after that they fail and that's when the creaks and moans start. also, it's not unommomn for parts like tie rod ends and ball joints to start making a racket, especially of they've never been greased (like mine).
