The 1st gen 4BD-1 was direct, the 2nd gen 4BD-2 (mid 90s) was indirect
I am only familiar with the 1st Gen.
I don't have any first hand knowledge, though it's my understanding that direct injection is much easier to start in cold temps, in fact, some are not even equipped with glow plugs??? though i would imagine they have some sort of cold starting device e.g., heated air intake, etc.

my only experience is with indirect injection.
The Sakai Isuzu engines had glow plugs installed, but weren't connected and the engines cranked and fired perfectly fine in below zero temps. So connected glow plugs would be a bonus for sure.
We also had several Ingersoll-Rand SD115/116 compactors with the Cummins 6BT... Absolutely hate those engines. Pain to start cold, not too mention all the failures with shutoff solenoids and cam pins. Their concept of using the grid heater seems arbitrary compared to actual glow plugs, but whatever works for them I suppose.
Hey guys first post but i want some help. First time doing a conversion but i have a 1989 ford ranger and i want to put a small straight four john deere in it. can you guys send in the direction of adaptor plates and transmission help would be much appriciated

Does the Deere engine have an SAE bellhousing pattern or a unique to Deere spec?
Which Deere engine is it?
The other thing to consider if the engine is RPM speed or load governed.
well see im just starting out im i need to get all this stuff what would you recommend. See my boss has a irrigation engine that is a straight four i need to get its specs but i want to put something like that in my trucks.
I'd physically measure the motor, Even if it is a little 4cyl it maybe much taller then the ranger can handle.
Oh and also look into changing the governor on that motor, the one on there wouldn't be build for variable speed use, so the pump may need to be changed.
shes cam driven pump. umm no governing on the engine. all manual throttle. but im kinda the dumb one when it comes to this so i may not be grasping the governing. its just like a tractor motor you can rev her all you want.
You'll need to post up the model of the Deere 4 cylinder engine. They made some fairly small ones to some rather large diesel 4 bangers.
The model which is cast into the engine block and the engine serial number which should be on the metal plate riveted to the block as well and I should be able to narrow down some of the specs for the engine.
If the engine was a dedicated irrigation pump engine and not a retro-fit it likely will have a load governed pump.
A diesel engine is usually governed in some way to prevent over-revving the engine. An automotive style is speed governed, either with stop screws on the throttle or electrically. Load governed also has the throttle stops, but in addition, senses the load on the engine and can govern the engine further. Which would suck for road use, the engine would sense the load during take-off and reduce power etc.
also i was planning on getting my engine from a small tractor or skidsteer i dont know yet i havent decided. Um if you could also be so kind as to list or point me to a website listing all that john deere had straight fours in.
Diesel engines have the governor contained in the pump. That is what controls the fuel. By moving the throttle you are just adjusting the governor, then the gov delivers the required amount of fuel. A consistant speed governor is different then a variable speed governor they react to load differently, and you may have drivability issues with it.
