In my case, it was necessity as I did not have the money to replace the pcm. I still use the wts light plus 10 seconds or more before cranking and then will engage gpr again if it seems to be missing or smoking a lot in extreme cold. I live in GA so extreme cold is more of a rarity here than in other parts. Even at 191k, mine will usually fire off with just a little glow plug action.
Can I ask why someone would want to put there GPR on a manual switch? Why break something that works?
The reason I installed a manual switch is because I shorted out my PCM by using the wrong replacement relay (mechanic friend told me they were all the same). After figuring out my PCM was bad, by using this forum, I liked the logic of being able to control my glow plugs as needed and not every time the truck is started.
Guess I just dont get what the PCM and a GPR have to do with one another...
Mueckster just cleared it up with the link. Basically the PCM controls the GRP. And when you don't do all your homework before replacing parts (me), you end up damaging things. Lesson learned....Never blindly trust your buddies because they tools...do all your own research and read this forum daily.
I do see your point in just letting the PCM control the GRP as it is new and should be fine-- but because I was already researching this issue I decided I liked what a lot of the people here were doing with the manual switches.
Again, I just dont understand why you would not replace the broken parts and have the PCM function as it should...
The GPR system is a very simple and very much a trouble free system...
I'll just continue to turn the key and wait a few seconds to start my truck.
I agree with your logic of replacing the broken parts and let the machine function as designed....but I drive a 1999 powerstroke. If I had a 2011 with brand new wires I don't think I would touch it. My wiring is over 13 years old and while I'm sure I corrected my problem by replacing the PCM, I'm not totally convinced that my wiring couldn't have issues due to the back-feed from using the wrong relay or even a broken wire shorting somewhere. My first reaction was to pull out the harness and trace every wire. I don't know if you ever tried to pull the harness but if there is an easy way please educate me. So, While I agree with your logic it just wasn't possible for me to completely convince myself to jump in over my head (concerning the harness). It was easier to run a completely isolated system with new wires which gives me the control over the relay.
Now, could the new PCM properly control my GPR....possibly. Could I have wasted my time by installing the new switch...possibly. But, in the end I spent a Saturday in my garage working on my truck...and I learned a ton from this forum.
It takes less then 40 minutes to remove and replace the top of motor harness... Should take less then 15 to replace the harness from the 42 pin connector to the PCM.
I have a 2001 that has had the motor out 5 times, wires are fine.
I'm not trying to knock you, but what if someone else has to drive your truck one day... Are you going to print off starting directions for it and leave them on the dash?

I understand you're not knocking but I also understand your level of expertise far exceeds my limited knowledge. Judging from your signature and the 5 swaps I'd believe you know more than most.
If someone else is driving my truck---they stole it. Hopefully it will be cold and they won't be able to get it started anyway.
As far as starting instructions--could you give me your number and I'll have them call you for the walk through...just kidding.
