Just got my truck out of the shop for a high pressure leak and it runs great. It finally reminds me why I bought a diesel. I bought the scan gauge and dialed it in and it said I got up to 19 mpg with a 4 inch lift and 305's and I kept it under 2000 rpms. Does that sound right?
Other then the lift the truck is stock. It's a 2003 f250 4x4 with the early 6.0. I don't have much money but am wandering what are some things I should do to increase the longevity of my truck and to increase mpg? I have emissions testing so I can't do a straight pipe, so I was thinkin a less restrictive cat and a straight through muffler from what I have read. I will haul a few trailers in the summer nothing over 2,000 lbs though. So what do y'all think?
I just bought an 03 4x4 6.0 with a 4" lift, so I'm glad you asked the question. I don't know much upgrade history but I do have the Sinister EGR delete. A SG II is definitely on my wish list.
I'm very new to Diesels but from all my FTE reading, I will be doing a arp stud bolt install to prevent head gasket problems since I would like to install a controller. My truck slowly lost power then died with no restart. I also hydro locked trying to start it. Luckily I know a local diesel mech that is pulling the glow plugs to find the bad injector. I hope the injector is what caused the engine to die while driving in the first place.
Is the egr delete a must do? Does is improve mileage and help the motor out?
I'm sure y'all were waiting when I would get in on this thread.
No, the EGR delete is not a must do. 508HP and not only do I still have working EGR system, but I have the original one that I had when the truck just had 20 miles on the clock. It has over 200k now.
Add to that that I have the EGR system that is considered the more unreliable system attached to the 6.0. The 03 and 04 model years some would say had the best EGR system.
Now I am a statistic of one, but that isn't surprising at my level of modification as most delete EPA equipment without a second thought as it's EPA, so it must be evil. However, think of this, even though I am a statistic of one at this level of modification, given what people claim how horrible the EGR system is, I shouldn't even be a statistic of one. I should be complaining about why I didn't delete/bypass the EGR system.
Then, of course, there are the legal ramification to this decision (regardless if you have testing or not), but that isn't going to go anywhere I'm sure, so I'll leave it at that.
Tex I think its great that you Give thfem your Opinoin someone has got to be the bearer of bad news . But they really should know all the facts and possible consequences of doing an EGR deleate.
To the OP I honestly think your EGR Cooler will be fine as long as you keep the oil cooler in operating spec your 03 has the good EGR Cooler in it its already made like the upgraded egr coolers.
I suggest getting all Fluids and filters changed first then Next on the list should be Gauges so you know if things are within operating spec like the oil cooler you would watch ECT vs EOT for that one
Scangauge is a great unit for this and ccant beat the price

I agree, but after having done it so long and having been met with quite a few that just don't care, it's almost like arguing the health consequences of doing drugs or smoking. Some people that angle just doesn't matter.
Which it should, one fine and all the savings that you had with doing a delete goes right out the window and they are getting more aggressive about it. I see more and more of those mobile sniffers on the on/off ramps for the highway.
I have the scan gauge and my eot and ect are never more than 20 degrees apart. I also have emissions so I think I have to have it. Anyhow would a straight flow muffler with a 4 inch cat back system be good? How bout a less restrictive cat?

See what I mean?
You have to have it regardless if you have emissions or not. That is a myth that you only have to have it if you have emissions.
If y'all want to still get rid of it that's one thing, but make no mistake, regardless if you have testing or not it's a federal no-no. Which trumps state/local.
The only true benefit that you are going to get from it is sound. Nothing more. The cats on todays vehicles are not the same restrictive ones that my parents had to deal with. Barring that, there really isn't a reason for getting rid of it, not from a performance aspect anyway.
