I think my power steering pump might be going, or already gone.
When driving, my 2001 F250 v10 4x4 turns easily enough. However, when stopped, it is nearly impossible to turn. Once the engine starts to rev for acceleration, steering becomes instantly and significantly easier.
There is no real audible whine when I turn from stop to stop.
Related, a while back I had a significant load in my bed and I remember thinking I wished I had more braking power. I've heard the power steering pump also supplies brake boost. Accurate?
Is there a relatively easy test to verify whether the pump is bad?
The power steering pump only supplies power for braking on trucks with diesel engines (hydroboost). Gasoline engines use manifold vacuum to power the brake booster.
Replacing the power steering pump may be just fixing a symptom and not the problem. Is the front suspension in good shape? Do you have large tires? How is your steering box? What about your steering stabilizer?
As for testing the pump..........it's a pump. Spin it, it makes pressure.
You're undoubtedly onto something. My suspension is pretty harsh in the front. I bought the truck second hand with 35" tires. Need to find and check the steering box because my steering is pretty loose. And the steering stabilizer... Help me out with what that exactly is.
