Possible Shifter Cable problems

For the last two days my 2001 expedition had trouble going into the right gear. Whenever it would say I was in drive I was actually in neutral. It's never done this before. Well this morning I got out of class and went to my car and it wouldn't start. Apparently something was up with the gears or something, but whenever I hit the shifter it started right up. My father tells me that it may be shifter cable, but I have no idea how to find or check that. Any Advice?

Take a look under the steering column for two trox screws, they often loosen which affects the movement of the shifter cable. There are threads he for it, I haven't had theissue.
