First DEF Refill

I will be refilling my DEF tank for the first time tomorrow....if I buy it from my local autoparts store (Auto Zone, O'Reilly's, etc.) does it come with the nozzle to prevent overfilling, or is that only on the bottle from Ford? Is there a particular DEF I need to buy, or just whatever they have? The message center still shows "Under Half Full", not to the 800 mile warning yet...so about how much will I need to buy?

Sorry if this has all been answered before, I am at work right now and don't have the time to do a search!

Thanks!

As far as I know, Ford has the only nozzle that will prevent the overfill...however, I have only used the Motorcraft brand.

Oreilly's, and Walmart have Blue DEF with spout. It is easy to fill but listen to tell when the tank gets full. Do not top off as I tried to do the first time as it will overflow. People say the container and spout from Ford are better designed and will not overflow. Blue Def containers work fine if you are careful when filling. The cost is around $12.00 for 2 1/2 gallons. Good Luck!

If you do overflow, just rinse it away. I've used watered down Diet Mountain Dew once or twice. No DEF powder or crystals anywhere near the filler.

it is only a 7 gallon or 7.5 gallon tank. I just put in a 2.5 gallon jug and called it a day. There is no need to get it full unless you are towing a lot and you are out in the middle of nowhere for an extended amount of time. DEf is not hard to find anymore.

How many miles do you go before the tank is empty?

You fill it with oil changes so depending on how you use your truck 5000 - 7500 miles. It has warnings to tell you when your getting low and they give you plenty of time.

I'll second that. I'm one of the "oops." Like me, you won't believe it could happen to you until you're not paying attention and do it.

It is actually a 5 gallon tank. I have to wait a few miles after my information center says less than half full or it will not hold a full 2 1/2 gallon container. My use rate varies depending whether I am pulling or not. Your driving style effects the rate of usage also.

As others said, if you're using the BlueDEF jugs it won't stop before overflowing.
I've done it once (outside and couldn't hear).
If you have a garage to use, I find that's the best place because I can hear what's going on inside the DEF tank (it will begin to gurgle when you need to stop).
An idea others had is to buy the Motorcraft jug first and you can reuse it with BlueDEF but have the good spout.

It's an easy process but don't get distracted and don't refuel at the same time.
When mine reports under half, I've been able to get a 2.5 gal jug in there.
However, that's what I assumed when it overflowed so it depends on the duration of "under half" which is why I listen now.

5 gallon tank for pickup models.

Which is a bonus if you live near one or one is part of an occasional travel route.
For most of my driving though, neither is true or I've already filled the tank prior to a trip.

On a side note, do we have to buy some special piece of hardware to use these DEF pumps or is that just another internet story?
Either way I look at it, it's easier for me to get it from the local auto store and I know others who are in the same situation.

Here's what they're selling at O'Reilly's. The included spout makes for much easier filling than the first time I did it over a year ago.
