On another board there was a posting asking if there was a difference between a panel truck frame a pickup. The poster said a friend had a '48 panel and he told him the front axle was dropped from the factory 1" because the panels have a higher center of gravity than the pickup. If this true? I mounted my '48 panel body on '50 pickup chassis and didn't notice any problems in the mounting areas, it sat right on it. If this true, will it affect the way my panel handles. I have noticed that the rear of the truck sits a little high but I figured the guy I bought it from might have put heavier springs in the back.
For what it's worth, I checked the parts books and couldn't find anything that shows a different frame, front axle, or spring package for body type 82 (panel) vs. body type 81 (pickup) for the '48. There appear to be some gaps in the data for the earlier years, though, so I wouldn't say that conclusion is firm.
I checked all 3 series of my parts books (48-54, 48-55, and 48-56) and there's only one frame and one front axle from 48-53 on the F-1 trucks. Doesn't matter if it's a pickup or panel truck.
Frame 48-52 C (1/2 ton) # 2C 5006-A
Axle 48-52 C 7RC 3010-B
In the 48-56 set of parts books ( many omissions and mistakes) there isn't any listing for the frame on the 48-52. That could mean Ford dropped the part from it's system of availability by 1964 ( when my set was printed.) In my 20 years as a Ford Parts man, I can remember frames being available only for a few years (5-6 yrs.) . Sonebody told this guy a fairy tale. Probably has a aftermarjket or altered axle in it.
Hey Barry! Glad to hear from you - it's been a while. Thanks for getting the details on the frames. You are absolutely right - being an ex-parts man helps a lot!
You have me a little confused, sorry. Do all of the numbers you posted mean they didn't change anything until '52 and the pickup and panels have the same frame? I just want to clarify your info.
Even if the frames were different there wouldn't be much I could do, I don't have the original panel frame and I have to live with what I have. I just wanted to know.
I also want to thank all the others that posted and will post. Barry thanks for the extra work, I really appreciate it.
Sorry I have no uselful info but just wanted to comment on the truck avatar you're flying. It's really neat. It looks like you better pull over soon and check the oil though. Looks like that flatty is leaking pretty bad.
So it's not a massive oil leak then? I guess I should have known you aren't running a Y-block. Sorry I missed the flatty trademark smoke. My lack of old engine experience is shining through once again. Darn!
Ford came out in 48 with the 7RC 5005 part number. In 1952, someone decided to supercede the 7RC number with the 2C 5006 part number. What most likely happened was they made a slight change in the frame. If they make changes, they usually supercede the number. I noticed on a 52 truck I parted that the 2 frame mounts for the front motor mounts were slightly shaped different on it than the ones on my 1950 F-1. When they made the change, they also required you to get those additional parts I listed to make the new frame work on the earlier trucks. I ran into this with many superceded parts in my days as a parts manager. You were lost without the O.S.I. books. Now it's all done on the Ford CPD computer system. You look up a part and it will tell you what you need. Too bad they don't list anything older than 1980 on it.
