Ive been reading that with a higher mileage truck its good to eventually switch to 5w 40, is this a good idea, what about synthetic. Dont want to drag this out to a big discussion. Just getting ready for the winter. thanks, I have 170,000
Ya I switched to 5w-40 this last change and I can tell the truck is a little quitter and starts up better since right now the tempature has started to drop to freezing in the morning and it starts good.
Just switched to the 5/40 & it does seem easier to start & less 'clatery'; where I live it's pricey @$120 but if it keeps it in one piece a bit longer then worth every penny!
Mileage doesn't matter. Mines got 265000 and i'm using Rotella T6 synthetic. Changed oil at 8000 miles last oil change and the lab test can back normal with a recommendation to stretch interval out to 10,000 miles. Can't complain about that....

That's impressive. At $120/change, anything people can do to SAFELY extend the drain interval is like money in the bank.
Did Blackstone do the test?
What is your driving like - short or long trips, towing or no?
When switching over to synthetic, is it ok that it mixes with the little bit of 15-40 that is still left in the engine? How will this affect the effectiveness of the synthetic?
I had my pickup into ford about why my milage went to hell in one tank and has stayed that way and it was smoking alot and of course it wouldnt smoke for them and they found nothing wrong. so i asked them about switching to 5-40 for the winter and they have never heard of any one running that so i looked in the owners manual and it doesnt say anything about using that oil either for any temp ranges. Would it void my warrenty if i went with 5-40 for the winter?

Thanks.
Will not hurt anything. Just for your info, there is approximately four qts. of oil left in the hpop system and no, you don't need to get it out.

After your truck was built/owners manual printed Ford allowed the use of 5w-40, and offers its own Motorcraft brand. What is in your owners manual is 10w-30, its what I use year around. Its much cheaper than a 5w-40 and its cold weather performance is about equal to it, I have used both and I don't think anyone could tell the difference.
A 10w-30 is much more shear-stable than a 5w-40 according to my UOA's, and like I said much cheaper, usually it can be had for $11-$13 a gallon vs. $19-$22 for the cheapest 5w-40.
