After your truck was built/owners manual printed Ford allowed the use of 5w-40, and offers its own Motorcraft brand. What is in your owners manual is 10w-30, its what I use year around. Its much cheaper than a 5w-40 and its cold weather performance is about equal to it, I have used both and I don't think anyone could tell the difference.
A 10w-30 is much more shear-stable than a 5w-40 according to my UOA's, and like I said much cheaper, usually it can be had for $11-$13 a gallon vs. $19-$22 for the cheapest 5w-40.
roadrunner01,
How does your UOA's on CJ4 compare to your CI4+ John Deere 10W-30? Does one perform better than the other?

Currently I am on my first run of CJ-4, I had quite a stock of the CI-4. I should be able to post a CJ-4 UOA within a month or so. I need 2,500 more miles.
Troy I can't remember, are you using a 10w-30 also?
For normal or severe service, use Motorcraft oil or an equivalent oil
conforming to Ford Specification WSS-M2C171–D or API Service
categories CI-4 PLUS, CI-4/SL or DHD-1. If CI-4 PLUS oil is not available
CI-4 or CH-4 is acceptable.
That being said, I use Rotella T6 5W-40 all year with a Motorcraft filter and have been happy. I tried 15W-40 earlier this year in the spring but I think it started nicer with the 5W-40 so I went back to that.
Will not hurt anything. Just for your info, there is approximately four qts. of oil left in the hpop system and no, you don't need to get it out.
Awesome....thanks.
Now that the weather is cooling down, this will probably be the next thing I do. If I can get 8k - 10k out of an oil change, It should balance out cost wise compared to conventional oil.
Ive been reading that with a higher mileage truck its good to eventually switch to 5w 40, is this a good idea, what about synthetic. Dont want to drag this out to a big discussion. Just getting ready for the winter. thanks, I have 170,000
Both of my trucks love 5w-40 synthetic, i switched my 6.0 at 90000, and my 7.3 at 180000 miles. They both start better(no rough starting) run smoother and quieter, worth the extra money IMO.

I wouldnt recommend that with a 6.0, they shear oil and will cause it to loose lubricity, i change mine every 5k in both trucks
