I had to replace the head gaskets on my 86 E150's 302. While I had the heads off I took them in to get magnafluxed and a valve job done. Now I have them back on but Im not sure how to get the correct clearance on the (rocker arm?) is there a correct clearance or torque on the bolts. Can someone confirm the correct procedure when tightening them down?
Most later model Fords valve train is non adjustable. Tighten the rocker arms down and ride. Most all machine shops know that on Fords they have to remove some material from the valve stem after grinding the valves and seats to get the proper installed valve height.
I just rebuilt my 83 460 and the precedure in the factory manual was as follows.
1 pry the rocker back and collapse the lifter. make sure you get the oil bled out of the lifter.
2 measure the gap between the rocker and the top of the valve
The book called for a desired measurement of .100" - .150"
The acceptable range was between .075" - .175"
This was for my 460, it is the same type of set up with hyd. lifters but I don't know if the numbers would be the same or not. I had 7 rockers I had to shim to get in the desired range. The manual said Ford makes a .060" longer and shorter pushrod to get you where you need to be.
I agree with Broncomule in that most machine shops know that they have to grind the stem a bit. It depends on how many valve jobs have been done on it also.
Good Luck!
